The passage about Haitian families’ ambivalence towards American school educational system and reasons why on page 22 is very thought-provoking to me. Being an educator, I have always focused my attention on students’ performance but never really think about the importance of parents’ role in bridging between home and school and that there are parents from certain culture with different educational believes and values might have a hard time understanding the American educational system.
This is more cultural than personal or any other reasons. As a teacher, I will keep in mind the differences of students from different cultural backgrounds and try to understand and cooperate my communication with their parents with these cultural differences in order to better help my students.
What from my personal experience agrees to this phenomenon is that the traditional Chinese educational system is also a system that respect teachers to a very high degree level and that teachers could be very strict towards students and parents would think of it as a positive thing in terms of disciplining their children. Also it is a very book or text-centered education thus parents from China could also feel the same about American educational system for being very diversed in classroom activities or teaching contents or methods. Maybe it will be helpful if when an on-going project is being questioned, or before it is questioned, teachers could explain to students the advantages of such activity so that they could pass it on to their parents to avoid any misunderstanding.
