Right to the City is a member of the Green New Deal Network, a coalition of organizations across the country dedicated to building grassroots movements that push for climate and environmental justice at a governmental level. It is also concerned with creating sustainable union jobs that address the damages historically done to Black, Indigenous, Brown, working class communities, communities of color, and other marginalized groups.
Since RTTC joined the GNDN and developed its own GND team approximately five months ago, it has been actively supporting the network in the passage of the new infrastructure bill. So far, August has been a very eventful month: on the 10th, the Senate voted in favor of a bipartisan infrastructure deal in which large chunks of the original proposal were missing: the bipartisan bill is not only too small to effectively tackle climate problems, but also fails to protect communities that are disproportionately vulnerable to their worsening effects, the likes of which have been abundant in recent years. However, at the same time, the Senate also passed a $3.5 trillion reconciliation budget, which presents a great opportunity to reclaim some of the funding for climate, care and justice. To build up grassroots pressure for Congress to ensure the passage of this deal, the GNDN is holding a #SealtheDeal Day of Action on August 19th, with over 20 events taking place nationwide. As a new member of RTTC’s GND team, I’ve been able to gain an up close look at the logistics of organizing, through working on outreach, coordinating, and attending GNDN meetings.
