Shanti Escalante-De Mattei is a 2019 Gallatin Global Fellow in Urban Practice collaborating and learning from Cooperation Jackson, based in Mississippi. This is her second grant awarded for research in community land trusts. As an anthropologist of the Anthropocene, Shanti is interested in how community land trusts reveal how particular stakeholders within and without of the community come to create “green” spaces in the pursuit of preserving and empowering particular groups, ethics, and aesthetics. Additionally, she is investigating how this cluster of motivations comes to undo or recreate destructive relationships with the land and non-human beings.
