My name is Maria Jesus Mora and I am a 2019 Gallatin Global Fellow in Urban Practice. This summer I will be working for a cooperative of Latin American migrant women in Madrid (SEDOAC) who are trying to combat labor discrimination. I am very excited to work alongside SEDOAC to promote consciousness about the vulnerability that these women face due to their disenfranchisement, ethnicity and immigration status. As a Fellow in Urban Practice, I hope to learn how to make visible a story often gone untold and to help SEDOAC members develop a subversive counter narrative. During this summer I am determined to get a grasp of how an immigrant and female-led grassroots organization works and operates. Further, I hope to better understand Latina domestic workers’ most pressing grievances so I can shed a light on them.
The Gallatin Global Fellowship in Urban Practice provides funding and support for 6-10 advanced BA and MA students to pursue extended, community-engaged, practice-based research projects in partnership with urban social justice organizations.
