Oh no! What’s wrong with that U-Matic deck?! Seeing error messages like this can ruin a media preservationist’s day, as digitization projects are put on hold while the deck is repaired. This blog aims to demystify issues around broken/malfunctioning analog video equipment and provide information regarding their repair. This will include detailed posts that document step-by-step repair processes, as well as general information about caring for and working with video decks.
With the help of media conservator/audio engineer Bill Seery and video engineer Maurice Schecter, I undertook a project as to learn as much as I could about analog video equipment, and trouble shooting playback problems with them. The Tracking Issues blog will serve as a space for me to share what I have learned over the course of this project.
