E-Portfolios at Liberal Studies

I would like to present the Liberal Studies e-portfolio project. Our program required an e-portfolio platform for our students to collect and share their academic work with faculty, advisors, etc. for both learning and assessment purposes. We have developed an e-portfolio solution using Google Groups to assign and control access to the content, and Google Drive as the repository. With the help of ITS, we have been able to create Google Groups for each student as well as folders on Google Drive which are automatically shared to the corresponding Google Group. Each Group includes the student, their faculty and academic advisor, as well as a department administrator. Additionally, we have created an “About this Portfolio” information document and an editable profile template which is automatically included in each student’s portfolio.

This e-portfolio solution will allow us to better assess our students’ work as they progress through the degree, as well as evaluate departmental learning goals and outcomes. For the students, this solution gives them a place to collect, reflect on, and share their academic work in progress, which will deepen their learning and engagement with our curriculum. We also hope to leverage these portfolios and profiles to foster community within our program.

We are piloting a full-implementation of the e-portfolios this (Fall 2013) semester. In my poster, I will present a brief description of the project, timeline, examples (of both profile and portfolio) as well as “pain points” and “future directions”.

Deploying Services with Jenkins

Jenkins (jenkins-ci.org) is an open-source continuous integration server.  This tool allows for the development of applications to be handled in a consistent manner by creating jobs to do all the heavy lifting.  Apply triggers to automatically build the development branch of an application whenever someone commits changes in GitHub.  Set the schedule to run scripts at 3:00 AM.

.edu Services in ITS has branded its instance as Benson, where there are currently two services relying heavily on it: NYU Classes and the CMS.  Both use it to build and deploy the code to multiple machines in multiple environments, as well as running maintenance scripts.

This presentation is to demonstrate how easy it is to configure Jenkins for a service to “set it and forget it.”

Steinhardt Technology Services

A framework for technology enhanced education

Review this ‘outcomes focused’ poster which explores the Course Innovation Grant program at Steinhardt. The goal of the Course Innovation Grant program (CIG) was to enhance existing courses with technology within at least one of these themes: adaptation of course delivery (online, hybrid, f2f), creation of student-centered environments, and integration assessments (formative and/or summative). Using this framework, the Steinhardt Technology Services team successfully enhanced 12 courses with technology in 8 weeks.

FAS Course Enhancement Case Studies: Digital Tools + Methods for Active Learning

Case Study #1: Introducing Google Glass and network analysis /data visualization tool as interactive learning platforms.
Case Study #2: Leveraging Amazon Web Services as a platform for active learning.

Our posters cover the design and implementation of these projects, focusing on collaboration with faculty and introducing new tools and platforms to novice learners.

NYU Tech Savvy

The NYU Tech Savvy Foundational Series is a five-part online series of short (20-30 minute) e-learning modules designed to introduce you to some key technological resources that are available to you. More than step-by-step tutorials, these modules illustrate potential uses and benefits of using these technologies in your work, whether academically-oriented or focused on administrative proficiency. Each module also includes information on additional resources for optional hands-on and other training, documentation and guides, as well as sources for tech support and suggestions.
