The NYU Classes Project: Moving NYU to an Open SourceLearning Management System

This presentation will examine the University’s transition from Blackboard, a proprietary software application, to an open source learning management system, NYU Classes. Specifically we will explore:

  • the three-phase approach for rolling out to NY Classes to the University’s different schools and the tools and techniques used in this transition
  • ways in which system usage data shaped project decisions, including our levels and methods of communication to the NYU community, and has helped us to measure progress against project goals
  • how having an open source system has given us more flexibility to allow user input to influence the shape and direction of NYU Classes across the GNU
  • the ways in which NYU has benefitted from being part of a very active open source community that includes peer universities and how NYU is contributing back to this community.

NYU SternPlay – Take the Stairs

NYU SternPlay is a mobile app that utilizes iBeacon location-based technology to promote better collaboration and improve efficiency at Stern. The first phase of the app is an initiative called “Take the Stairs”, a school-wide competition promoting stair usage. Various groups will compete to see who can take the most steps, and in so doing will reduce elevator wait times, congestion and energy consumption. Those who log the most steps on leader boards will be rewarded.
