This summer we went on two virtual field trips. First was on Friday July 17, 2020. The students visited The Louvre in Paris, France; DalĂ’s Theatre-Museum in Figueres, Spain; and Frida Kahlo Museum in Mexico City, Mexico. We put the students into teams and each team was assigned one of the three museums to explore. Their charge was to find artworks that speak to them and explore how the curation of the space is helping them to understand the artist or the theme of the exhibition. They then presented their findings to each other. After students’ presentations, we invited Set and Production Designer, Gabriel Evansohn, and faculty Jeanette Oi-Suk Yew to speak with the students on their process in designing Herbu Brantley’s immersive art experience space: NEVERMORE PARK in Chicago.
On Friday July 24, the students visited The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Faculty Dan Soule spoke with the students his design and process in designing CAMP: Notes On Fashion for the Costume Institute at The MET. The students then visited the Temple of Dendur virtually and was charged with setting A Midsummer Night’s Dream in that space as a site specific production. Afterwards we invited faculty Mia Rovegno who directed The End and the Beginning which took place at the Temple of Dendur to discuss the experience and the process.
