TISCH DRAMA STAGE Presents:

RENT

Book, Music and Lyrics by Jonathan Larson

Directed by Orion Johnstone

A Message From the Chair

Tisch Drama is a community devoted to creation, collaboration, and critical study. Our degree program combines rigorous conservatory training across ten professional training studios with a robust academic curriculum in Theatre Studies. Through the dynamic production process of TISCH DRAMA STAGE, students have the opportunity to synthesize critical thinking and practical training in the context of creation. This annual production season that sits at the heart of our program brings students together from across the spectrum of training methods, disciplines, and critical frameworks available at the department, and puts them in collaboration with compelling thinkers and practitioners from the contemporary professional field.

Each year, we program a range of artists who are committed to investigation, interrogation, and innovation, and who present a wide spectrum of views, interests, styles, processes, aesthetics, and relationships to language, process, and form. This range of programming provides students with insights on the creation of work across many professional arenas and through many different lenses, giving them a glance into a variety of potential post-graduate trajectories available to them in the field, and offering inspiring models for building sustainable lives in the performing arts.

Most importantly, the productions in our TISCH DRAMA STAGE are laboratories that exist as extensions of our classrooms. They are spaces where our students’ education is ongoing, through performing on stage as actors, conceiving and building theatrical worlds and aesthetic stories as designers, and contributing to the making of meaning on stage as dramaturgs. While these productions give students a chance to apply their training and education in collaboration with professionals, they are not necessarily meant to be a place where our community of students, faculty, technicians, and guest artists demonstrate a static idea of professional excellence. As with all spaces of learning, these productions are meant to be additional opportunities for experimentation, risk-taking, discovery, learning, and growth – both for our students and for the extraordinary professionals who work with them. This framework is fundamental to the incubation of possibility for the future of our professional field.

Also fundamental to our ongoing endeavor of collaborative work is our ethic of collaboration, which seeks to nurture belonging as learners in our department. A culture that centers on belonging requires a collaborative process that develops connection, mutual aid and trust; it encourages us to be rigorously curious collaborators, and it is at its best when we can readily move through conflict with care and hold one another accountable for our growth.

A final thought of gratitude to you, our audience:

Theatre is a form that depends deeply on the presence of an audience, who bears witness in real time to the artists’ embodiment and living through of images, stories, and ideas. Even after weeks or months of work in rehearsal rooms, meeting rooms, and shops – as theatre artists, we don’t begin to truly understand what we have made until the work is newly witnessed by our audiences. This means that your presence here in our theater is a tremendous contribution to the work, to the learning journey of our students, and to the future of our field.

Thank you for being here, and for your contribution. It is warmly welcomed.

Tomi M. Tsunoda
Chair, Department of Drama

A Note From the Director

When RENT opened on Broadway in the mid-90s, I was 14 years old, and it was the first time I had ever encountered any storytelling about Queer people, of adults talking joyfully about sex and collective power and direct action. As a teenager, I was still attached to coloring within the lines. And yet, when my Fundamentalist Evangelical Christian father said he disapproved of the RENT poster hanging in my bedroom because of its depiction of Queer love, I didn’t even consider taking it down. Even in my sheltered teenage heart, not yet fully awake to my own Queerness and Transness, I knew that there was something Holy in the soul of this show, that if my dad only really knew the stories and the people in it, it would be obvious to him that this poster, this show, Belonged on my wall. I think that that was my first real act of defiance.

RENT, at its core, is an invitation to Love in ways that are defiant and actively disruptive to comfortable patterns of privilege and to the systems of dominance that thrive on disconnecting us from each other and from our inherent wholeness. I believe that my life, and our lives, literally depend on this kind of Love.

Our RENT is more of an ensemble piece than any other version I’ve encountered: linking the individual to the collective at every opportunity and rooting deeply in the direct action and community care aspects of the story: the peak of the AIDS crisis, the squatters rights movement, the Tompkins Square Riot, etc. I am deeply moved and honored and giddy to get to co-create this vision along with this immense and courageous team, held by a circle of Queer Elders who have been generously accompanying us.

Whatever your prior experience with or feelings about this musical, I pray that our RENT allows you to re-see this piece anew and that it nourishes and fortifies all of the ways you Love.

Yours In Liberation,
Orion Johnstone (they/he)

A Note From the Dramaturg

We would love to welcome you to tonight’s performance of RENT.

RENT is a show that has had a lot of influence on our culture today. There’s a good chance this is not your first experience with RENT; you may even have a personal connection to it through some of the songs, the movie, or even having seen a production before! Today, we ask You to let go of your expectations and immerse yourself in our reimagining of the piece.

The entire production team of this show has been hard at work trying to create a new, more politically engaged version of RENT. Throughout the rehearsal process, the company has met with a group of queer elders as well as members of squatter groups that were active in the 1980s. When they were asked how they felt about RENT, answers varied, but generally, we heard repeatedly from people that we spoke to that RENT did not feel reflective of their lived experience. The commercialization of the piece distanced it, shifting away from radical action and the people of color who were leading so many of these charges; RENT was no longer something that was made for them.

During the performance today, please engage as deeply as you can with the materials you are seeing, and the ways that it exists in relation to the world around you, even today. In the wake of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the state of housing in the city and gentrification have developed similarly to the way they did a few decades ago, the dramatic loss of life making way for dramatically increased rents, pushing longtime tenants out when they can’t afford them, and units being held empty despite the desperate need to increase housing availability.

Most current NYU students were not alive in the 1980s and 1990s during the height of the AIDS epidemic and the Reagan Administration. We were not there to witness the Tompkins Square Riot. In our roles as dramaturgs, we’ve worked hard to share as much information as we can with the company of this show, and they in turn are working hard to share that with you, incorporating it into the world of RENT.

In this production of RENT, we hope to honor the people who are a part of its legacy.

Thank you and we hope you enjoy RENT,
Megan Hayward (they/them) and Jaden Tyler Urso (she/her).
