The form itself was a delight. The pacing, format, and expression are detailed but not pedantic. By using a comic book to present the concepts, the ideas, themes, tools and strategies are rendered visible. I appreciate the articulation of the variety of sequential devices. Chapter 3 is the most compelling for me – the differentiation of Panel to Panel categories – the articulation of implied movement, use of space, and composition illustrate this in an informative way.
I appreciate the questions regarding the entrenched hierarchical structure of “art” and the valuation we are accustomed to applying to art v craft which weave through the book. What criteria do we place on notions of Art and Art making? Who formulates and upholds these valuations? What are the implications of economics, knowledge (another value discussion), and visibility? This is an ongoing question that continues to challenge various institutional stakeholders and visual culture makers.
