Assignment 9

rough draft of “Results” and “Evaluation” section. The following is the link to the full draft: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1SohV-0uFbQn4veBdY-3wJ4R3N9YIjyAszFERU-WCIYo/edit

    1. Cold Read Interviews

Originally, the plan was to get one or two volunteers who would have my concept designs tattooed on their skin. Once I had these volunteers, the initially plan was to hold pre and post tattoo session interviews, where I would ask them questions like the following:

    1.
    2.
    3. Dfak

However, I did not get to this point in the time frame of this project. Therefore, I had to change my evaluation method to be different. Then, I chose to stay with the interview method, but changed the subjects of the interviewees to people in the ages from 20-26. In each interview sessions, I asked for a cold read feedback session on my concept sketches. I did not give any context or explanation to what the concepts meant, except the explanation that the pictures shown were tattoo concept designs. I expected the responses to be quiet negative, for the concept sketches were meant to look ‘unsual’ and unfamlliar to the eyes. They were almost meant to be anti-aesthetic. Then, as with my prediction, four people responded to the designs negatively, while two responded positively. The following section will be showing the responses that I received. The format of the presentation is Name (# of tattoos): “exact response”:

The following were the few of negative comments:

    1. F (0 tattoos):“it’s unusual… don’t like that [the design placements] overlap with the anatomy weirdly”
    2. R (0 tattoos ):“there’s nothing worse than that”
    3. J (6 tattoos): “It’s unnatural… doesn’t go with the body”

The following were the positive responses:

    1. J (lost count): “I like it / it’s sharp … it’s a line that cuts across the entire body” “ It’s both a challenge to physical and spiritual bodily autonomy.”
    2. E (3 tattoos):”looks swag, probably painful”

I thought it was important to include their age and how many tattoos that they had, for this could determine how familiar one was with conventional tattoo designs and the tattoo culture.

    Evaluation:

Based on the interviews I’ve conducted, my project was able/unable to achieve my goals of []. When answering my research question, “”,

First, I think it’s important to reiterate that My goal was to have tattoos that challenged the traditional image of the body, which meant that people would likely have visual discomfort when looking at the tattoo designs.

    • Then, from the perspective of my goal, I believe that I was successful in capturing the discomfort of the intended imagery.
    • Though majority of my interviewees thought that the designs were unusual looking, the pool of the survey was small. I need to expand the audience size in order to truly conclude that my designs go against what we consider is “normal” on the body.
    • Additionally, I would like to consider how these respondents would have answered differently if they knew the concepts behind my designs.

Assignment 7

production update:

I’ve said this in class, but this blog is the first time writing it in writing. I have FINALLY chosen a theme for my tattoo series, and that is to apply Legacy Russell’s manifesto, Glitch Feminism, onto my project.

I have changed the entire draft of my paper to be about Glitch Feminism, and the following sums up what my project is in a single sentence: a series of tattoos that explore tattoos as a form of glitch, as described in Legacy Russell’s Glitch Feminism, on physical skins.

I have began my process of tattooing fake skins and watching lots of tutorials online. some videos I’ve been watching are the following:

  1. Q inks
  2. Daniel Yuck
  3. Tattooing 101

And the following are some concept sketches:
1.

2.

Then, the following are the tattoo practices that I’ve done (sorry about the tattoo residue, it’s harder than i thought to clean them off):

  1.

Because my designs are all straight lines, that’s all I’ve really been practicing in terms of a specific tattooing skill.

I do plan on practicing other forms of tattooing such as shading, curvy lines, etc., but my priority will be the line practices!

abstract:

I present “TITLE,” a series of tattoos on individuals that explore tattoo culture and history in East Asia, portraying the connection between masculinity and tattoos in East Asia and the effects on tattoos on patriarchy.

The process of making “TITLE” primarily involved learning how to tattoo with a machine gun and looking for volunteers to be the canvases. To evaluate, thorough interviews and surveys were conducted to both the participants of this project and the ones viewing the project as an outside audience. The results showed that participants reported a heightened sense of ownership and connection to the art that was permanently inscribed on their bodies because the tattoos allowed them to express their identities, experiences, and beliefs in a symbolic, visual way. Furthermore, the study revealed a shift in the relationship between the artist and the canvas. Through the intimate and collaborative nature of tattooing, both parties engaged in a shared creative process, blurring the lines between creator and medium.

Uhhh Protoypes

Using the techniques discussed in class, make lo-fi prototypes related to at least three concept abstracts from last week.

  1. painting idea

I started to wonder whawt kind of art style I wanted to pursue, if I were to continue with this project. For the prototype, I chose a stamp-like metthod, where I faced palmed myself into two pieces of paper. It had some form, but definitely not very recognizable. I wasn’t sure if I wanted the medium to speak as a self portrait of mine, or have both the medium and the subject of the painting to protray myself.

For this painting, I decided to do more abstract version of myself, imagining myself as a three-eyed person. I think I did this because of the nature of how hair looks on paper; lots of black hair on paper look kind of spooky and unnatural. I also ran out hair midway, so I couldn’t really finish my vision of having three eyes. Therefore, I am attaching a digital drawing of what I was visioning.

From this experience, I think I want to do silhoutte type of art, where there aren’t clear hard cut lines that distinguish every aspect of the painting subject. I kind of want colors and lines to blend together. Examples of my inspo are the following (I would be combining the following two aesthetics?):  Giclee Abstract Figures 1 Wall Art, , largeDreams Come True - Earth Tone Art - Contemporary Pastel Color Abstract Painting Painting by Modern Abstract - Pixels

  1. tattoo idea

for this prototype, I digitally tattooed my friend Alex. The process was the following:

1. I showed Alex three designs that I already had. I made him pick one.
2. I then asked Alex the placement and the size of the tattoo.
3. When I was putting the tattoo on him digitally, I asked him which colors he would like to use, and he said red and black.
4. With the finished digital piece, I zoomed the photo of the tattooed hand to the actual size of Alex’s hand. I then put the photo above his real hand and asked him how it felt.

For the experience, I mainly wanted to see how my designs would look on a human skin + explore the collaborative aspect of tattooing. I immediately realized that I did not like Alex’s color choices, but I respected his choice and colored the beads of the tattoo with black and red. I think this will continue to be a challenge if I pursue this idea in the future.

It also got me questioning about what I want to actually tattoo on people as a project. I really appreciated Allison’s example that she gave me, which was called “SKIN: A MORTAL WORK OF ART” (https://ineradicablestain.com/skin.html). I think it’s interesting that the piece is called a ‘mortal’ work of art, because I always percieved tattoo as an immortal work of art, since it is permanent and can outlive the soul. However, now I also understand how it can be mortal, since the art is almost ‘living’ with whoever’s body its on.

I really need to think about the essence of the tattoo subject I will pursue :(!

  1. Internet Persona

I took Internet Famous Class by Zoe my first year in IMA. In this class, we learned that every succesful internet persona has a set archtype that they stick to. The following description is from Zoe’s class:

Create a Celebrity Persona for yourself

Acting as your own manager, create for yourself a celebrity brand. Choose a mythological archetype from the list below or find your own. Pick an archetype that expresses a single aspect of who you are, a simplified, easily digestible version of yourself. If you already have a celebrity persona, try picking an archetype that’s completely novel and new.

Now, pick what type of celebrity status this character has: Exclusivity (lots of money and economic capital), Exoticism (lot of cultural capital), Exceptionalism (lots of skills and social capital) or Everydayness (the appearance of no capital)

Using instagram, pinterest, or another socially-enabled collaging software, build a mood board expressing this new celebrity persona. It should contain exactly 9 photos.

  • At least three pictures should be of you inhabiting and impersonating the character you have created. Really get into the role with some posed shots, some action shots, whatever it takes to portray this character.
  • At least 3 pictures should show details about this character’s life, or any other imagery expressing the lifestyle with which you want your brand associated. Objects, props, scenery, maybe relationships (they can be fictitious if you want. Collect these pictures from wherever you want, no need to take them from yourself.
  • At least one photo should express something to create intimacy – a (preferably fictitious) piece of personal information or fan access to your (preferably fictitious) inner life to help create feelings of closeness and access with your audience.
  • At least one photo should encourage your audience to partake in a fan like activity, probably through mimicry, or a how to.
  • One photo is a wildcard.

Archetypes: The Love Goddess/God, The Innocent Child, The Trickster, The Party Animal, The Caretaker/Mother, The Fool, The Warrior, The Dark Lord, The Hero, The Free Spirit, The Keen Teen, The Mentor, The Wizard, The Witch, The Rebel, The Explorer, The Cheif/boss, The Creator (The Artist), The Everyman, The Lost Soul, The Spunky Kid”

Based on this previous assignment, I decided to create a fake internet persona + redo this assignment that fits my idea. I decided to pick “the Creator/Artist” archtype, and the following is the screenshot of the fake instagram profile:

While doing this protoype, I kind of realized that this would be a very long-term project that I don’t think will be very doable in the few months. I also would have to be very consistent in posting to several social medias (such as tiktok, insta, and youtube reels), which sounds like a pain without a personal producer that would work with me in this project.

Overall, I think I would like to pursue with the first or the second one, but I’m leaning more towards the second one. I already orderd all the supplies, so I feel prepared to jump on the project!

Additonally, I think doing research on the first two ideas and looking at reference art projects will help me decide on my route.

Assignment 2

HW:

  1. I present my collection of tattoo artworks, an art collective dedicated in exploring the tension between a living canvas and the artist. I did this because body modifications (including tattoos, piercings, nail art, haircut, etc.) are the only type of art subcategories that have a living human as the canvas of the artist, and I wanted to research the tension and the essence of consent between the two human objects (artist and the canvas). I used machine gun tattooing and the results were evaluated through a thorough interview and survey before the project began and after the project finished. Participants reported a heightened sense of ownership and connection to the art that was permanently inscribed on their bodies because the tattoos allowed them to express their identities, experiences, and beliefs in a symbolic, visual way. Furthermore, the study revealed a shift in the relationship between the artist and the canvas. Through the intimate and collaborative nature of tattooing, both parties engaged in a shared creative process, blurring the lines between creator and medium. The findings show the potential of body modifications as a powerful medium for expressing the complexities of human identity and creativity.Related Project, Wafaa Bialal:

     audiences, venues, publications:

    • People who have tattoos, tattoo artists, experimental artists, radical artists
    • New Museum, any venue that would consider this as a performance art (I would be stationed in a museum and I would be live tattooing)
    •

2.I present my digital persona project, an experiment dedicated to evaluate how rapidly I can gain a social media following on instagram by carefully crafting a archetype/persona and sticking to its principles. I did this to explore ideas of social media algorithms, to talk about the tensions of the attention economy, and to portray the falsehood of social media persona. I did this by utilizing different platforms of social media such as TikTok and Youtube, and I posted something daily that seemed suitable and trendy for the most dense population of each social media platform. I was not shy about putting on a false persona or occasionally buying bots to increase the credibility of my account. I evaluated my process by analyzing the engagement rate of my followers and calculating the growth of my followers. I was mediocrely successful in my experiment, gaining 10k real followers within the 3 months span.

    audiences, venues, publications:

    • I cant think of a venue that would display this. Maybe on social media/ digital venues?
      • Making it in a form of a tiktok/reel to gain even more followers/engagement through the project
    • Millennials and Gen-Z’s, anyone who’s interested or is involved in social media.
    • Users who are most likely to follow micro-influencers

3.I present Self Portraiture, a 6ft x 6ft painting that is a direct reflection of myself as a person. I did this to challenge the traditional idea of what an art medium is (like oil painting, charcoal, etc.). I wanted to see how far I could use my body to produce as much art materials as possible. I used materials like hair, spit, blood, tears, and anything that I found suitable as a drawing or paint material within my body. Additionally, I used my body to paint as well, physically using any parts of my body as a paint brush. I evaluated my project through doing check-ins to make sure that I was not utilizing anything but my body and completely finishing the piece by the end. I concluded that my idea worked because I was able to finish the painting with just my bodily resources.

I think I wanted to change my portfolio to something that fits to my existing art style. The one that I made for front end web ended up looking very game-developer person portfolio looking, which is not who I am.

I played around with various styles, attempting to make the website look more “physical” and “tactile” on a digital screen. I kind of failed (as I shown in class), so I took a different approach. The new approach was fulfilling my design principles that I had thought out for front end web midterm, which can be found in this presentation:

Final Documentation

Title: TBD

Description:

  • A lino print project that shows interaction with self – focuses on self judgement. Development from my last project
  • A mixed media project that incorporates traditional lino cut print, laser cutting, and sewing. The project aims to show the hardships one may face in terms of confronting their own feelings to themselves. It shows the artist’s habit of avoiding personal experiences, history, and emotions and losing a sense of self.
  • “Two panel comic” – reading from left to righ

Ideation Prccoess:

  • I first wanted to make a book — a zine sort of a type. I had never explored this medium before, so I thought it’d be interesting to try out. I also wanted to make it more ‘interactive’ by making into a flip book. With the users having to physically flip a section of page to reveal the next page, I thought the element of shock would be greater. I also wanted to explore mimicing a conversation between the art and the audience without verbal words. The audience is ‘asking’ the book by flipping the page, and the book responds by revealing the next page.
  • I wanted to lasercut lino blocks instead of engraving it because I thought hand engraving 20ish tiny lino blocks would’ve been very time consuming and difficult.

Initial Protoypes:

Harships; Pros/Cons:

  • I did not like the fact that the ink stamps made the book very messy looking. I did get feedback saying that users actually liked the messy look. People said the accidental finger prints made it look more hand made and personal.
  • I also wish that the cover was a hard cover so that it looked more put together.
  • I did enjoy book binding. I think this was a good exploration step I took towards the final project. I’m glad I have these tools in my toolbox for my future projects.

Change of medium:

  • After this exploration, I decided to change the medium (kind of). I still wanted to incorporate print making because I really love traditional medium.
  • This time, I wanted to make a bigger project (physically).

Inspiration:

  • one of the initial designs: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1usGFxYUYzQCIYc82MQ5onx4PyndkEykU/view?usp=share_link
  • After many drafts and thoughts, I decided on my design, which is the following: https://drive.google.com/file/d/178SCivbtCeFjSmL0E4Mm5VmKb6ZZIdtn/view?usp=share_link

Prototypes/Progress:

  • laser cutter – rubber setting, 35/100, rester, run it twice
  • version 1:
    • lasercut once + hand engraved afterwards
      • left a lot of residue, burn marks, and a lot of ashes
      • line is too thin to show
  • version 2:
    • lasercut once, lines were still too thin to show after adjusting the lines on procreate/illustrator.
    • Sadly, I lost this lino block and could not get a picture 🙁
  • version 3:
    • lasercut twice only.
    • Below is what it looked like on paper:
    • produced 8 copies!

Harships:

  • many many illustrator files/procreate sketches – export + import from different apps make the width of the storkes change. However, the limiation of the laser cutter is that the stroke has to be 1pt for it to engrave. This was difficult to work around and there was a lot of triar and error.
  • running out of linoleum – multiple Blick runs. Battleship Gray lino are the only lino blocks that can go under the laser cutter. However, this lino type was out of stock in many Blick sights, even when their website stated that it was instock in person.
  • People in my house school also did not like that I was cutting linoleum. Although I had been approved by the Shop manager to cut lino, people were still doubtful and called the shop staff on me a few times to stop me.
  • It was also hard to perfectly align the two linoliuems onto the paper. I had done a legistration for the paper with rulers and precise measurements, but the two blocks still ended up not perfectly aligned.

Final:

  • I wanted to focus on symmetry because it’s the same person (myself) – it’s like looking at a mirror – a form of self reflection. I am looking at myself while also avoiding myself.
  • It also metphoarically shows one sidedness of my sexual/romantic experiences – shows non verbal ways of communication that i always opted for because I could not say the word “no” in many instances. The gaze away shows different kind of ways to show discomfort that’s not verbal.
  • I also want to add red strings to finish the project – strings will function to show the tension of this interaction (more explanation below).

What I liked/How I feel about the project:

  • was happy to combine two things I enjoyed.
  • Technology and hand sewing – interesting mix
  • love studio art
  • love physical interation/piece

Future Steps:
