Our very own Jo Piazza writes for the WSJ on the Dalai Lama’s visit to New Jersey for the Peace Education Summit.
Seventh-grader Mahishan Gnanaseharan wanted to look sharp to meet his Holiness the Dalai Lama on Friday morning at the Newark Performing Arts Center. He spent more than two hours shopping for a pinstriped suit at Kohl’s, but even new clothes couldn’t calm his nerves before the meeting.
“It was intimidating but exciting at the same time,” Gnanaseharan, 13 years old, said. The Dalai Lama calmed him down by whispering in his ear, “Keep speaking against violence. Good job,” while shaking his hand.
“His hands are large. It was a really embracing handshake,” Gnanaseharan said.
