A Justice Sunday III bulletin from the Rev. Herbert H. Lusk II, the pastor of the Greater Exodus Baptist Church, the inner-city Philadelphia church where conservative Christians have convened to rally for Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito. Preached Lusk, who critics have denounced as an “Uncle Tom” for consorting with the Christian right: “‘My friends, don’t fool with the church because the church has buried a million critics. And those the church has not buried, the church has made funeral arrangement for.'” That burying one’s opponents has not been the trademark of persecuted religious groups — ostensibly the reason for “Justice Sunday III” is what Tony Perkins calls the “clear and present danger to religious freedom in our country” posed by such actions as the Indiana House’s recent ban on religion-specific prayers — but rather the province of beefed-up majorities, is, once again, a contradiction overlooked in favor of describing new converts to that growing majority: according to The Washington Post, this Justice Sunday’s audience was 60% black and has the backing of the interfaith attack-group, “Jews Against Anti-Christian Defamation.”
