Wall Street Shamans

13 February 2006

The Washington Post’s Laura Blumenfeld visits a New York CEO-turned Virgin Islands shaman and finds a crowd of “aging boomers and the urban spa class” who can’t cry in the boardroom but can when their shaman cleanses their energies and puts them in touch with the dead father’s soul. Laughing at the spiritualist tendencies of the moneyed classes is old fun — table-rapping, anyone? — and unfortunately Blumenfeld’s story gets stuck here, in pleasant chuckling at the blond go-getter shaman with his Tibetan yak beads, and his Long Island clientele, and never gets into any deeper investigation of what it is he actually believes and his clients experience, beyond the chill-out factor of a good pre-cocktail backrub.
