24 February 2006 On the Episcopal Diocese of California’s short-list for bishop are two openly-gay priests, the Rev. Bonnie Perry of Chicago and the Very Rev. Robert Taylor of Seattle. If either of the two are selected, it would be in contradiction to the directive of the worldwide Anglican Communion, which last year requested that the U.S. Episcopal Church abstain from installing any more gay bishops until a final decision on the Anglican Communion’s position could be reached. The spokesman for the California Diocese acknowledged that confirming Perry or Taylor could result in the global Anglican body declaring that they are no longer in communion with the California church, but otherwise, that the Communion has no means of disciplining an independent diocese. |
