Stephanie Butnick: With the arrival of CNN’s Belief Blog, Angie Chuang at Poynter asks, “Is the Belief Blog, and other online initiatives like The Washington Post’s recently launched “On Faith,” a sign of a Web-based religion journalism renaissance?” The answer? It’s complicated. Readers have always been interested in religion news, but decreased resources and fewer religion beats pose a challenge for quality religion reporting, especially on the Web. Chuang writes, “Though dwindling resources are a very real obstacle, the growing amount of content online is not a replacement for truly knowledgeable beat reporters.” We’re keeping our fingers crossed that the Belief Blog will help to fill the gap.
