Jeff Sharlet: I’ve been cruising the airwaves to promote my new book, The Family, talking with a lot of great radio hosts about what I call the avant-garde of American fundamentalism. Two of my favorite conversations occurred at the opposite ends of the political — or, at least, economic — spectrum. On public radio’s “Marketplace,” Kai Ryssdal and I discuss the relationship of The Family to “biblical capitalism,” a theological variation on “Marketplace”‘s main concern. And with Esther Kaplan, author of With God on Their Side: George W. Bush and the Christian Right, and Marilyn Kleinberg Neimark, a founder of Jews for Racial and Economic Justice, I talk in greater depth about the history of avant-garde fundamentalism and how it shapes American foreign policy on “Beyond the Pale,” a program on New York City’s WBAI. Air America has also been tremendously supportive of the book, hosting great conversations about religion, politics, and The Family with Rachel Maddow, Thom Hartmann, Welton Gaddy, the Young Turks, Laura Flanders, and Ring of Fire. I’m also a new fan of a local program in Washington D.C., Caroline Casey’s “Visionary Activist Show.” I’m neither, but I loved every minute of this show, from the opening minutes, live on cell phone as my cab searched for WAMU, to our in-studio conversation, which Casey introduces with a terrific “Yikes!” Maybe most relevant to this blog will be the discussion with Bob Garfield on next week’s “On the Media.” Stay tuned.
