The E.U. commissioner for justice, freedom and security, Franco Frattini, yesterday announced plans for a media code of conduct when reporting on Islam and other religions in attempt to find a balance between “‘two fundamental freedoms, the freedom of expression and the freedom of religion.'” How, exactly, offense given to a religion qualifies as an infringement on its free practice, Frattini didn’t explain, but he did say that the code of conduct would be self-regulated, and the E.U. would not legally enforce the content of the media.
