Robert Schuller, among the inventors of the modern megachurch, turns the Crystal Cathedral’s pulpit over to his son. The LA Times reports that “unlike televangelists such as Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson, the elder Schuller stayed out of politics.” Yes and no — Schuller never made his politics explicit, but his American evangelical optimism contributed massively to the transformation of Christian conservatism from a separatist, fire-and-brimstone enclave to a culturally engaged feel good social — and political — movement.
