A North Carolina judge dismissed a lawsuit filed by the ACLU of North Carolina and the Greensboro Muslim Syidah Mateen which asked the judge to clarify the legality of using non-Christian texts, such as the Qur’an, for oath-taking in court cases. The case came about after two of the county’s top judges turned down gifts of Qur’ans intended to be used for court oaths, declaring that an oath on the Muslim text did not qualify for the state law’s mandate that witnesses lay their hands upon “the Holy Scriptures.”
