More Jack Abramoff fallout: The Republican “superlobbyist” who keeps popping up in unfortunate poses ever since Tom DeLay’s fundraising activities came to light takes another blow with the revelations in a Newsweek report that he’d redirected donations made by Native Americans for inner city youth to help the ultra-Orthodox Israeli settlement of Beitar Illit purchase high-tech military equipment to fight the Palestinian uprising. Through a charity Abramoff established himself, the Capital Athletic Foundation, money intended for poor city kids instead helped purchase sniper scopes, night-vision binoculars, camouflage suits and other “security equipment” for the outpost — Israel’s second largest settlement with a history of residents fighting with Palestinians. A lawyer for the Saginaw Chippewa Indians, which had donated $25,000 to Abramoff’s foundation, called the news “‘outer-limits bizarre,'” and said the tribe would never have donated money for such a cause.
