Prayers for Conviction

Virginia lawmakers, who are currently reviewing a proposed amendment to the state constitution that would secure the right to public prayer in schools and other municipal buildings, were angered last Friday by the public prayer of Rev. Debra Peevey, the lesbian pastor of Journey of the Heart Ministries in Reston. In her invocation opening Friday’s House of Delegates floor session, Peevey asked God to “‘convict those who are using their power not to lead or to guide but to harm the gay and lesbian citizens'” of Virginia. Reportedly, the chorus of “Amens” was a little weak.
