Things Pope John Paul II could have learned from Democrats or MoveOn.org: It’s a short list, but for starters, that Hitler/Nazi/Holocaust analogies tend to be more trouble than they’re worth. Paul Spiegel, president of Germany’s Central Council of Jews, and German politician, Volker Beck, have strongly criticized comments comparing abortion to the Holocaust, made in a passage of the pope’s new book, Memory and Identity: Conversations Between Millenniums. Spiegel denounced the comparison as “‘unacceptable'” and a reflection that the Catholic Church “‘has not understood or does not want to understand that there is a tremendous difference between factory-like genocide and what women do to their bodies.'”
