NYU welcomes all researchers to our Special Collections, regardless of institutional affiliation.
- FOR FACULTY: To set up a class visit to Fales, contact Nicholas Martin, the Librarian for Fales Archival Collection & Reference Services. You can also find resources for teaching, including sample assignments, here and examples of student work here.
- FOR STUDENTS AND RESEARCHERS: To access materials in the collection:
- Explore the finding aids to the collection to find the material you want to see.
- For guidance on using finding aids and doing primary source research, click here.
- If you would like more assistance navigating the finding aids, send an e-mail to Nicholas Martin, the Librarian for Fales Archival Collection & Reference Services.
- Set up a research account.
- Using your research account, request an appointment. You’ll need the name and call number of the collection and the box number(s) you want to see.*
- You will be notified by email when your materials are delivered to the archives reading room, located (as of September 2019) on the second floor of Bobst Libary at 70 Washington Square South.**
- These materials are one-of-a-kind, so there are some special measures in place to take care of them. You’ll be asked to leave bags, backpacks, coats, and most other belongings in a locker outside.
- Come prepared with paper and a pencil (not a pen) to take notes. (Laptops, phones/tablets, and photographs may or may not be permitted—ask first.)
- If you have any questions, feel free to ask for help at the reading room desk.
*Most materials are stored offsite and will take about 48 hours to reach the library.
**Researchers not affiliated with NYU will need to stop at the Library Privileges window in the library vestibule to obtain a pass.
