Week of 4/19

This week I spent time organizing my new page of things that can be bought or made for the sensory room that have been successful and popular in other sensory rooms. I also read more articles and research papers about which sensory features and activities are best for relaxation and calming purposes, versus educational or occupational therapy purposes. I think it is important for this sensory room to focus on the former purpose, as it is supposed to be helpful for the patients at the dental office, and is not in a school or therapy setting, which is why I wanted to understand better the different aspects and purposes/functions of the different sensory items to know what is most important to include in this one.

Week of 4/5

This week I looked further into what aspects of sensory rooms are most successful and most liked by the users. I compiled the list into a new page of new items that can be incorporated into the sensory room in the future with names and descriptions, but I could not figure out how to add the picture of each thing. I also compiled a list of possible DIY sensory items that can be made for this sensory room that are not just simple purchases. These could prove to be great for the sensory room, since they are more customizable and adaptable to the specific space, purpose, and user population, and are much less expensive than things that could be bought already made.

Week of 3/22

I spent this week mostly researching other multi sensory rooms even further, and looking at different aspects of the sensory rooms that might be good additions to this one. I also researched different sensory activities, and looked at the main parts of those, seeing if there might be a way to implement those in a non-messy way in the multi sensory room. I also spent time trying to fix a problem with my website!

Week of 3/8

Similar to last week, I spent the majority of my time this week doing further research on sensory rooms, as well as the psychological aspects and science behind them. I also did more research on the different components of the rooms again, and tried to see what might be an interesting project to work on. In my work with children with special needs in the past, I have used sensory walls, which seemed to be something that might go well in this sensory room. I looked into the different types of sensory walls, and thought about what might be the best parts of sensory walls. I also spent time looking at different types of sensory toys that are available for purchase to get inspiration from those as to what sensory aspects are most beneficial and appealing.

Week of 3/1

This week I mostly spent time researching other multisensory rooms, looking at the difference between them all, and what might be something that we could potentially incorporate into this one. The different sensory components and features from all the other multisensory rooms had some really cool features, and that led me to research the psychological benefits of each of the different things, so that I could understand them better, and understand what sensory components might have enough features in the room and what might be most beneficial to add. I also wanted to be able to differentiate between the features that are more rooted in the occupational therapy realm and the ones that are primarily for relaxation, as I would assume the latter is what would be the primary focus of this multisensory room.
