Challenge 1 – Week 2
Week 2: Sketching solutions
Unnecessary Inventions and Whimsical Devices
Out of all my original ideas, the main problem I decided to tackle is the experience of getting wet while washing dishes, which oftentimes leaves your clothes damp and uncomfortable. With this in mind, the principle goal of this project is to find a way to dry the user’s clothes, as well as aid in the cleaning and drying of dishes in the process.
Inspiration:
To begin, I started my design process by referencing various ways in which others around the globe have developed creations to tackle similar issues. Additionally, in his video on Drawing Tips and Tricks, Spencer Nugent advises viewers to break down the sketching process into three key components: form, divide, and beautify. Following these tips, I continued brainstorming and developing my unnecessary invention designs.
Concept Sketches:
1) Concept 1:
Dish pouch and poncho: A poncho-like clothing piece that can shield the user from oncoming water, while also utilizing a built-in pouch with absorbent fabric for drying dishes.
Still, although there are ways to prevent getting wet while washing dishes, accidents still happen. For this reason, I also decided to think of ways to dry clothes and dishes after the washing process.
2) Concept 2:
A dish and clothes drier: A dish drier with a compartment to dry clothes. As the hot air from the top section fills the machine, the lower clothing drying compartment builds heat and steam and heat to dry the clothes inside.
3) Concept 3:
A dish and clothes line: Hangers with clips or hooks that can hold dishes and clothes at the same time, allowing them to air dry efficiently while saving space.
