Environmental Justice and Activism at this year’s Climate Week NYC

Climate Week NYC (September 21-27) is a major, annual summit to spread the message of climate action locally and across the globe. Hosted by the United Nations and the City of New York, it is a way for people to get involved in a fast growing movement towards building a better future. This year, they’re hosting dozens of events , mostly online, to showcase, and teach, the global leadership of young people and grassroots activism. Here are a few Youth, Public Mobilization, and Justice events that you can’t miss:

  1. Subversive Catwalk: Women, Fast Fashion, and Climate Justice
    Monday, September 21 | 10:00am-12:00pm EDT
    This event explores the role of women in the fashion industry, and the opportunity they have to play a key role in fighting for sustainable fashion and better working conditions. During this workshop, you’ll learn about women working in the production, marketing, and distribution of fashion in the Global North and South; as well as watching a short film about a group of artists that created a “subversive catwalk.” 
  2. Ending Racism and Classism in the Climate Movement
    Monday September 21 | 1:00pm-2:20pm EDT
    This workshop educates people on how classism and racism disrupt our ability to protect the planet, as well as individuals. This event will take place in Spanish and English.
  3. Turning the Tide: Building Community Resilience Through Climate Justice
    Monday, September 21 | 3:00pm-4:15pm EDT
    Join this event to learn about the disproportionate effects of climate change on indigenous peoples– from leading academics and activists in the field– and how climate justice can build community resilience. 
  4. How to Lead Listening Circles
    Tuesday September 22 | 10:00am-11:30am EDT
    Using approaches from Sustaining All Life and United to End Racism (SALUER), this workshop explores how to lead listening circles surrounding climate change and climate justice. It will provide useful tools that are applicable in any social justice movement. 
  5. Divestment, Indigenous Rights, Women
    Tuesday September 22 | 1:00pm-2:00pm EDT
    This event will feature Indigenous women from various sectors, tribes, and academic institutions speaking on the importance of Indigenous rights and women’s leadership in this climate movement. They’ll explore the work that has already been done by so many Indigenous women, as well as showing how you can stand with, support, and learn from Indigenous women leaders. 
  6. Climate Justice in NYC Discussion
    Wednesday September 23 | 3:30pm-4:45 pm EDT
    This event will be hosted by the Tishman Environment and Design Center at the New School in order to open discussion about the environmental and climate justice goals of NYC. Panelists will include members of the New York Panel on Climate Change and the Mayor’s Office of Climate Policy. 
  7. Sustaining Ourselves as Activists and Organizers
    Wednesday September 23 | 4:00pm-5:30pm EDT
    This event is an opportunity to connect with other activists and organizers in order to learn and share with one another.  
  8. Youth, Climate Action, and NDCs
    Thursday September 24 | 8:00am-9:00am EDT
    The NDC Partnership and UNICEF are hosting this webinar in order to share insights on youth engagement in NDCs from the Partnership, as well as the best practices for integrating youth from UNICEF. Youth representatives will be giving country case studies, as well as holding presentations and a Q&A. 
  9. Climate Action and Ambition Now: The Power of Network Mobilization
    Thursday September 24, 4:30pm-6:00pm EDT
    The Climate Group, by Under2 Coalition, and the Brazilian Conference on Climate Change are hosting this Youtube event in order to discuss network climate movements and relationships between subnational leaders and non-state actors.  
  10. Art and Activism: Nourishing Conscious Communities
    Friday, September 25 | 9:00am-8:00pm EDT
    The School of Visual Arts Division of Continuing Education is hosting its 4th annual Art & Activism event as an online Symposium, that will consist of presentations, workshops and film screening. The symposium will conclude with a conversation moderated by media personality Valerie Smaldone, a keynote speaker and a panel discussion focused on the topic of climate justice and creating a more collectively conscious future. 
  11. Environmental Hackathon
    Saturday, September 26 10:00am-Sunday, September 27 5:00pm
    Earth Hacks is a space where interdisciplinary groups try to solve local climate challenges in partnership with local organizations. Join this session to try and “hack” some of these climate change related issues! 
  12. African Voices
    Sunday, September 27 | 10:00am-11:30am EDT
    Sustaining All Life and United to End Racism will be hosting this event to share and listen with Africans impacted by the climate crisis. This Forum on African Voices welcomes African climate activists, and all Africans, to come share their stories and struggles, learn from each other, and get a broader picture of the threats of climate change.
