On the occasion of the international urban sustainability conference EDRA50 Brooklyn, NYU Tandon will organize in cooperation with Ca’ Foscari University of Venice (Italy) an art project titled “A Human Flower Wall” by artist Sasha Vinci, winner of the Sustainable Art Prize 2017 promoted by Sustainable Ca’ Foscari at the contemporary art fair ArtVerona and supported by the art gallery aA29 Project Room (Milan/Caserta).
The project consists in the creation of a live flower wall with a conclusive parade of people walking through downtown Brooklyn on May 26 in and around the buildings of NYU Tandon. This civic and artistic action focuses on the sharp contrast between todays gradually hermetic society and an ideal inclusive community that meets the 17 Sustainable Development Goals set out in the Agenda 2030 by the UN.
The projects starts ideally from Venice from the project “The Republic of Marvels”in Spring 2018, when the students of Ca’ Foscari University reflected on a utopian society living in harmony in full sustainability, thus arriving to New York City, the quintessential melting pot, where you may help realize these aims into a concrete action.
On Sunday, May 26, a parade of students and people will metaphorically constitute a biological and moving wall, made of flowers and humans as empathetic elements of life and transience, which will go beyond any form of separation or division, rather building bridges towards a more equal and inclusive society.
On this occasion you will have the opportunity to acquire new knowledge and competences, both on an artistic and an organizational level, taking part in the creation of an international art project and becoming live actors in the performance. The participation in the project includes the following activities:
- 2 meetings for project presentation with artist Sasha Vinci and curator Diego Mantoan;
- 1 lab for performance organization together with the artist and the staff of Ca’ Foscari University (so-called “infiorata”: thousands of gerberae and chrysanthema will be applied on garments and bodies to create a flower wall);
- 1 performance: the students who take part into the project will star during the performance carrying the flower wall and symbols created during the artistic action.
The 2 meetings will be held on May 23 and 24 (hours and venue to be decided), the lab on May 25 (during that day you will be able to participate to one or more shifts, depending on your availability, starting from 9am to 5 pm. Venue to be decided.) and the final performance on Sunday, May 26 between 11am and 1pm.
If you are interested in participating, simply fill out the online form (deadline: Monday, May 13, 2018). For further info or queries please contact us via email diego.mantoan@unive.itor visit the project website page.
