NYU Receives Award from the Sustainable Purchasing and Leadership Council

Sustainable Purchasing Leadership Council

NYU was recognized by the Sustainable Purchasing and Leadership Council (SPLC) with an Outstanding Case Study Award on the NYU IT Sustainability Initiative along with 10 other honored institutions during the 2021 SPLC Leadership Awards.

From the devices in our hands to the cloud where important project documents are stored, IT is a critical part of teaching, research, and work. Institutionalizing sustainability into our IT practices not only results in financial savings and reductions in energy and greenhouse gas emissions, but also encourages and instills a culture of sustainability across the University.

The case study documents IT’s effort to implement a variety of impactful sustainability measures including:

  • Electricity cost savings of over $250,000 annually;
  • Energy reductions equivalent to 1.3 million kWh – the energy use of over 425 average New York City apartments; and
  • Greenhouse gas reductions equivalent to planting 6,200 trees!

Additionally, this initiative reduces waste through actions like eliminating desk phones for new hires, purchasing only one computer and monitor per employee, utilizing multi-function devices (vs. personal printers), and reducing print and toner usage.

Sustainability at NYU is a team effort. This recognition was possible because of the partnership between NYUIT, Procurement, the University CIO Council, and many more.
