What’s Green on Netflix: July

Summer is a great time to get outdoors; you can go hiking, swimming, biking—the list is endless. It’s also a great time to take a break, relax and enjoy a good movie with friends and family.

Dozens of movies and shows come to Netflix each month, and we picked out 5 new-to-Netflix features that engage in a conversation about the environment.

  1. What The Health

OK, this film actually came to Netflix in mid-June, but everyone’s still talking about it. From the makers of Cowspiracy, this film focuses on the connection between what we eat and our health. This doc is powerful, and may inspire you to make some changes in your diet, or at least get you thinking.

2. Okja

Okja is a fictional story that takes on a real-life problem. When young Mija’s “super pig,”  Okja is taken by a large corporation, she and an organization of Animal Rights supporters set off on a mission to bring back Okja to her home. Heartwarming and exciting, the film draws connection to animal agriculture and cruelty.

3. Free Willy

I was so excited to see that this classic was coming to the computer screen on July 1st. If you have never seen it, Free Willy is a heartfelt story about a boy and his friend Willy, an orca. The story focuses on the captivity of sea animals and the release of the film sparked a nationwide movement to remove the whale that played Willy, Kieko, from captivity.

4. Chasing Coral

Coming to Netflix on July 14th, Chasing Coral is a documentary focused on capturing the problem of coral
bleaching. The film follows Richard Vevers and his team as they run a race against time, capturing the effects of climate change in the ocean. We are super excited for this one.

  1. The Truth is In The Stars

OK, so this one isn’t exactly about the environment, but it focuses on creating a meaningful conversation about the future. William Shatner, the much-loved star of Star Trek sits down with scientists like Neil DeGrasse Tyson and Stephen Hawking to discuss the relationship between science and the future. One standout moment is an interview with David Suzuki, a noted environmentalist.

We hope you enjoy these flicks! Join the conversation and let us know what you thought about these films. What’s on your watch list this summer?
