Welcome back to NYU! The NYU CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) program will be up and running again this fall, so if you want to get involved, keep reading! The CSA is a great way to get delicious veggies and support the local-food economy …nothing but good vibes and good food.
Below is some information on the NYU CSA. Please read closely.
What is a CSA?
“CSA” stands for Community-Supported Agriculture. In short, a CSA share connects you (the consumer) directly with the farmer. The shareholder pays a fee at the beginning of the season and receives produce on a weekly basis. This gives farmers security for the growing season and gives the consumer a variety of seasonal, fresh food every week. At NYU, we contract with Norwich Meadows Farm, a certified-organic farm just outside of the city. (You can click here to check out their website.) Because CSA shares contain what is picked that week, they are a great way to build your culinary vocabulary. (If you don’t know what purple kohlrabi or black turnips taste like, this is your chance to find out!)
NYU CSA Cost
A share for the growing season will cost $350.00 and will run for 10 weeks. (Don’t worry — you only pay once and can split it between multiple people.) This season, a CSA share will include veggies, fruits, and one dozen free-range, organic eggs each week. (Although, if you are a vegan or just aren’t into eggs, you can opt out of this addition and save $52.50 on the total cost. The eggs are delicious, though!) It’s usually around 20 pounds of food per week…sometimes more. So, one share could be split between 2 or more people.
NYU CSA Logistics
CSA pickups are held on Wednesdays at The Green House (40 East 7th Street — between 2nd and 3rd avenues) from 12pm – 3pm. (This timing is subject to change a little bit.) An integral part of the NYU CSA program is the volunteer requirement. All shareholders will participate in one or two volunteer shifts where they’ll help unload the truck and facilitate the distribution of food. It’s a great way to meet people and swap recipes.
