The Call to Action asks students and faculty to think more expansively about the “applied” aspect of “applied liberal arts.” With hands-on instruction and affordable classes in podcasting, writing, filmmaking, journalism, and photography, students are able to develop new tools not just for professional development but also for civic engagement, using new-found, multimedia storytelling skills to design innovative approaches to questions of equity, justice, and social action.
Every fall and spring semester, CALA takes on a different social justice theme, organizing events and resources, as well as showcasing student and faculty work, around that theme. Listen to author Sherman Alexie talk about the role storytelling plays in social justice engagement. Then, click on a semester theme below to explore resources and student projects.
