So I went to ‘GLOBAL MODE >’ @ Museum of Moving Image, and honestly, I wasn’t sure exactly how to make sense of the work.
Let me start with what I was able to understand from the piece. The visual impact was certainly very strong, I enjoyed the use of the digital elements, they gave me a sense of intentional janky-ness and being out of place. I enjoyed the wide frame via the use of a 360 camera, it reminds me of the HDRI image sometimes used for realistic lighting in film vfx. I wonder if the connection to the exhibits of MOMI is intentional.
However, there are a few things that I find hard to wrap my head around. firstly, I would appreciate a bit more clarity on what exactly the “ancient myth and contemporary reality” are for each segment, either in the piece itself or in more context through descriptive text. Also on the website it seemed like there was an interactive element with the animal avatars and the visitors, it wasn’t present in the piece the day I visited.
