Subtraction week 8: lathe first try

For this week I took the demo piece in class and turned it into a candleholder of sorts.

first I roughed out the shape I wanted, and then marked out the thinnest part.

I then cut out the shape, before which I didn’t know the piece was spalted maple, so I was super pleasantly surprised the see the pattern come to life and glad I didn’t go too far chewing off the material.

I then went on to sanding and finishing. I sanded the piece from 240 grit to 600 and put oil on it, and then I waxed it with the buffing wheels. During this process I had a problem.

I don’t know what I was doing but maybe I was putting too much wax on the wheel and that resulted in lots of wax just piling up on the surface of the piece, which took me another little while to polish away with the wheels.

And this is the final piece. The mark on the neck of the piece is a little too deep and I wasn’t able to sand it away. I guess I was still afraid of sanding too much.

and I used this later in another project as a stand for a Chinese folklore warrior/swordsman character.
