Frequently Asked Questions:
What scripts are you developing? See our current series page for series information.
When is the series? The first week of the 2025 series is 6/2-6/8. The second week is 6/9-6/15. The third week is 6/16-6/22. Each week a different script is developed. Each week begins on a Monday and ends on Sunday.
If I audition and am cast, am I in all three scripts? No, each team casts their own script. Most actors will be cast in only one script, but if you’ve selected more than one script that you’re interested in, it’s possible that you could be cast in more than one. There is a question on the audition form about this.
How many scripts can I audition for? You can audition for one, two, or all three scripts. If you are taking the graduate class that accompanies the series, though, you can only be cast in one script. If you also just only want to be cast in one script, there is a question about that on the audition form.
How many roles are you casting? Each script will need between 5-12 actors. So a total of about 20-30 actors. Many of the scripts have a diversity of characters and so we are looking for a diverse pool of actors.
Can I audition if I am an Equity actor? Historically, the answer to that was “no”, as we fall through the cracks when it comes to Equity rules. However, we have been told that AEA actors may request an exemption directly from AEA in order to participate. So if you’re able to do that, we’d love to have you with us!
Can I audition if I am still in high school? All actors must be at least 18 years old, due to NYU policies regarding participants under age 18.
Where and when are auditions? Auditions will be held online with the submission form opening on April 1 and closing on April 15.
What do I need to do for auditions? Fill out the online form — include your resume and headshot. You will also be asked to share a link to a 1-3 minute recorded monologue. For a musical or a play with music, you’ll be asked to provide a recording of you singing a few bars of a song and to demonstrate your range. You may receive an online callback from the director(s) interested in learning more about you.
What happens after I submit my materials? Our producer will send you a confirmation email in 3-5 business days following your submission. If you haven’t received a confirmation by that time, send her an email at taf263@nyu.edu to check in. You may hear directly from one or more directors who have the option to hold online callbacks.
When will casting be completed? The goal for each artistic team is to cast by May 7th at the latest. Then the producer (Teresa) will reach out to each actor who has been cast with an invitation and additional information. Actors who are not cast will also receive an email, but likely a week later.
What if I want to participate but have a conflict with one of the rehearsals or discover a conflict after I’ve been cast ? It will depend on the needs of the script and the director’s preference. It may be that you can miss one rehearsal and it will not impact the process.
What if, during the week of development, I show up late to one or more rehearsals or request to arrive late due to work, travel, or other challenges? Or discover a conflict that will cause me to miss one or more rehearsals that I am scheduled to attend? Again, this will depend on the director and the needs of the script. Of course, we expect our actors to be the professionals they are and honor their commitment to the process as the script will not be developed without the actors’ participation. At best, you’ll apologize and it will be a minor inconvenience. If, however, more than one rehearsal is missed and/or late arrivals are profound and/or consistent or you miss a reading, your honorarium will need to be reduced. If, for no other reason, it would be unfair to the other actors for you to receive the full honorarium when you haven’t put in the same hours they have.
Is there compensation? For each script an actor is cast in (which is one week of development — a Monday evening through Sunday late afternoon), actors will receive a modest honorarium of $250.
Is there housing? We don’t have housing for actors.
What’s the time commitment? The time commitment is approximately 30 hours over the course of 7 days. Up to 24 hours of rehearsal (6 rehearsals at 4 hours each), four hours of readings, and one hour call prior to each reading.
-
The development sessions (rehearsals) are in the evenings, Monday through Friday, 6pm-10 p.m. ET and on Saturday from 1-5pm ET in the theatre (there will be no rehearsal on Juneteenth so the week day rehearsals that week will start at 5pm; when Juneteenth falls on a Saturday or Sunday, we’ll figure out with the artistic team the best way to handle that situation).
-
Then there are one or two rehearsed readings – one on Saturday at 7 p.m. and one on Sunday at 2pm, also in the theatre.
Where is the series held? All development rehearsals and rehearsed readings take place in the Provincetown Playhouse (133 MacDougal Street) near Washington Square Park in Greenwich Village, NYC.
