About this Story:

Hua Mulan is a Chinese warrior. She took her aged father’s place in the army and retired to her hometown after the war.

Students will know about four seasons, weather conditions and poem.

Science: Weather, seasons, mixture of colors
Math: number 1- 100, compare the value of numbers between 1 – 100
Social studies: family members, dynasties, occupations, timeline
Language Arts: Chants, rhyming

Comparisons:

Students will identify and compare heroes/heroines in their own community with Mulan.

Community:

Students will show that they have integrated their learning by introducing their hero and describing him/her of their community from various aspects.

Communication:

Students will talk about numbers, dynasties, family members, main characters, descriptive words, jobs, seasons, weather conditions, clothes, and colors.

Language Functions & Forms:

Grammatical Structures: Subject+Verb +Object, an adjective as a predicate, A and B do something

Character & Word Study:

Vocabulary: Adj. to describe the color, weather, clothes and personality, nouns for family members and jobs, verbs for takeoff, put off, cut off, go, live and fight

Culminating Assessment:

Interpretive Task: Students will work in pairs and interview each other’s hero to create a Venn diagram
Interpersonal Task: Students will listen to the story and put pictures of the story scenes in order
Presentational Task: Students will give a presentation about a hero in their community including the following aspects :
Name, Hero’s name, 3 characteristics of the hero, hero’s job, hero’s working environment, the clothes he.she wears at work,  the color of his/her clothes, one sentence to praise the hero.
