The epic film of the Philippine diaspora, Batang West Side, closed the Spring 2023 season. The Fall season starts on October 20 with the Philippine-Canadian film, Islands, about a lovelorn man taking care of his elderly parents. It will be accompanied by a short film, Never Forget, about dark secrets from the Philippines resurfacing in the life of a young Fil-Am woman and her father in New York City.
On October 27, Panawin will present No Data Plan, a documentary about a young man who has been in the United States without citizenship for over 20 years. A marvel of post-modernist cinema, it is a film in the experimental mode that manages to be moving and poetic at the same time. It will be accompanied by The Sakada Stories, about first- and second-generation Filipino workers who immigrated to Hawaii between 1906 and 1946.
