The Visions/Panawin Film Series aims to introduce the New York University and King Juan Carlos I of Spain Center community to the ardent, prolific culture of the Philippines as expressed in key works from the rich and audacious canon of Philippine cinema.
Over the course of the Fall semester, Visions/Panawin will feature six classic films by Philippine cinematic giants (and National Artists) Ishmael Bernal, Lino Brocka, Eddie Romero, and Kidlat Tahimik, along with acclaimed contemporary works directed by Arden Rod Condez and Ramona Diaz.

Following this schedule, each film will have a two-week, video-on-demand-availability window and can be viewed on the Eventive streaming platform on Visions/Panawin‘s Eventive site at https://watch.eventive.org/visionspanawinnyu.
NOTE: This series is exclusively available to NYU and KJCC constituents courtesy of Sulo: The Philippine Studies Initiative at NYU. Access to the films have been restricted to the NYC Tri-State Area (New York, New Jersey and Connecticut).
How to Watch
Please visit Visions/Panawin’s Eventive site and select the film that you would like to watch. Once you arrive on the film’s Eventive page, click either “Pre-order” or “Buy” (don’t worry, you will be able to screen each film free of charge) and you will be prompted to enter an unlock code, which is (case sensitive):

If this is your first time using Eventive, you will be asked to register and create an account before you can proceed further. Once you are registered and the “purchase” for the film is complete, you will receive an email confirmation with a direct link to watch the film.

A Roundtable Introduction to the Series with Luis Francia, Gil Quito, and Fiel Corrales Zabat
In this roundtable discussion, an introduction to the film series, Luis Francia (writer, teacher at NYU, and co-chair of Sulo: The Philippine Studies Initiative at NYU) chats with the film series’ curator Gil Quito and award-winning graphic designer for television, scenic designer for stage and production designer for films, Fiel Corrales Zabat.
Roundtable Participant Bios:
Luis H. Francia is a poet, nonfiction writer, and playwright. In addition to the forthcoming Thorn Grass, his poetry books include Tattered Boat (2014), The Beauty of Ghosts (2010), and Museum of Absences (2005). He is a Palanca Prize winner in poetry, Manila’s prestigious literary awards body. He is currently an adjunct professor of Filipino Language and Culture at New York University’s Department of Social and Cultural Analysis and Co-Chair of Steering Committee of Sulo: the Philippine Studies Initiative at NYU.
Gil Quito was consultant for the MoMA’s major retrospective A New Golden Age: Philippine Contemporary Cinema. He has co-organized the annual Sinehan film festival at the Philippine Consulate New York. Associate or executive producer credits: Laurice Guillen’s American Adobo, Lav Diaz’s From What Is Before and Children of the Storm, and Sheron Dayoc’s Mientras Su Durmida. Screenplay credits: Gil Portes’ Merika and Mike de Leon’s Itim/Rites of May. Publications: Essays for Cinema Guild, Kino Lorber, Asian Cinevision; and the Cultural Center of the Philippines Encyclopedia of Art; book-length biographies of Marilou Diaz-Abaya and Lav Diaz.
Fiel Corrales Zabat is an award-winning graphic designer for television, scenic designer for stage and production designer for films. She has worked with the noted directors of the Second Golden Age of Philippine cinema like Lino Brocka, Ishmael Bernal, Mario O’Hara and Marilou Diaz-Abaya. She designed the classic Brocka Film Insiang, Ang Tatay Kong Nanay, Tahan Na Empoy Tahan; for Diaz-Abaya, Moral, Karnal, Alyas Baby Tsina; for O’Hara, Kastilyong Buhangin; and the award winning Sangandaan for Bernal. She was the recipient of the Natatanging Urian Lifetime Achievement Award from the Critics Circle Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino in 2020.
