José Rizal is a 1998 Philippine historical drama film directed by Marilou Diaz-Abaya and starring Cesar Montano as José Rizal. The film was based on the true story of Filipino patriot José Rizal, who was imprisoned under Spanish colonization, and tells Rizal’s story until the final day of his execution.
At the time of its release, it was the most expensive film in the history of Filipino cinema with a budget of over ₱80 million. The film was an official entry to the 1998 Metro Manila Film Festival, and swept most of the nominations with seventeen awards, making it the first film with the most MMFF award wins. After receiving critical acclaim and box office success in the Philippines, the film was screened in international film festivals in Berlin, Toronto, Chicago, and Spain.
It was recently digitally restored and remastered to preserve this legacy movie produced by GMA Pictures.
Atom Araullo Specials: Pag-asa (2023)
“The Atom Araullo Specials” episode aired on November 19, 2023, explores the cultural and maritime richness of the Philippines, particularly focusing on the contested waters of the West Philippine Sea. Atom Araullo, the host and renowned journalist, highlights both the historical and current significance of the nation’s territories, emphasizing questions about past and present administrations’ efforts to assert and protect Philippine rights in the disputed region. This strategic area has garnered international attention, with various nations closely monitoring developments. The program aims to foster informed public discourse and debate, aligning with GMA Network’s commitment to ethical journalism.
I-witness: Ang Huling Katipunero: Macario Sakay (2018)
The documentary explores the legacy of Macario Sakay, the last Filipino general to resist American colonization at the turn of the 20th century. While many of his comrades surrendered or collaborated, Sakay continued his resistance in Luzon’s mountains, eventually being remembered as a “tulisan” or robber, a reputation that affected his descendants profoundly. Howie Severino and his team investigate Sakay’s life, visiting caves, and prisons, and interviewing his descendants to uncover the truth behind his misunderstood legacy. Despite being portrayed negatively in history, Sakay now has a statue in Tondo, prompting questions about who is celebrated as heroes in Philippine history.
I-witness: Hinabing Pag-asa (2019)
Two years post-siege, Marawi remains devastated, impacting not just homes but also Maranao culture. Rebuilding the city will be lengthy, but preserving tradition may prove even more challenging. Weaving, integral to Maranao heritage, faces uncertainty post-war, particularly for Muslimah, who lost her heir. Yet, amid hardship, women at an evacuation center revived weaving, finding solace from conflict. Their resilience endures post-war, weaving with hope for Marawi’s cultural revival.
