About the Panelists:
Edwina Antonio is the Executive Director of the Bethune House Migrant Women’s Refuge, a shelter for distressed migrant workers in Hong Kong. Working with women migrants for more than 33 years now, Edwina has been a witness to the brutality of economic displacement of women from poor countries. She is also the Recording Secretary of the Board of the Mission for Migrant Workers (MFMW-HK), the first migrant serving institution in Asia since 1981, member of the Coalition of Service Providers for Ethnic Minorities (CSPEM-HK), member of the Outreach Committee of St. John’s Cathedral, Council member of the Kowloon Union Church (KUC), adviser of the Filipino Migrant Association, Friends of Bethune House and Association of Indonesian Migrant Workers, former member of the HK Against Racial Discrimination (HARD) and a former board member of Action for Reach-Out, a local group that provides support and assistance to commercial sex workers in HK.
Xyza Cruz Bacani (b.1987) is a Filipina author and photographer based in Hong Kong and New York who uses her work to raise awareness about under-reported stories. Having worked as a second-generation domestic worker in Hong Kong for almost a decade, she is particularly interested in the intersection of labour migration, climate change and human rights. She is one of the Magnum Foundation Photography and Social Justice Fellows in 2015, has exhibited worldwide, and won awards in photography. She is also the recipient of a resolution passed by the Philippines House of Representatives in her honor, HR No.1969. Xyza is one of the Asia 21 Young Leaders (Class of 2018), the WMA Commission grantee in 2017, National Geographic grantee, Pulitzer Center triple grantee and an Open Society Moving Walls 2017 grantee. She is one of the BBC!s 100 Women of the World 2015, 30 Under 30 Women Photographers 2016, Forbes 30 Under 30 Asia 2016, Fujifilm ambassador and author of the book We Are Like Air.
Marites Palma is a migrant worker in Hong Kong. She is the founder of Social Justice for Migrant Workers, a group of 26,000 migrant members. The SJMW group that serves their fellow migrants especially during the pandemic. Marites is also the Vice President of Lakbay Dangal, 2019 Resolve Fellow, and a former contributor of The Sun Hong Kong, a local newspaper for migrant workers.
