Sulo: The Philippine Studies Initiative at NYU, in collaboration with the New York Southeast Asia Network (NYSEAN), will host a book talk with Professor Kristian Karlo Saguin (UP Diliman). In conversation with Professor Nerve Macaspac (Queens College / CUNY Graduate Center), Kristian Karlo Saguin will discuss his award-winning book, Urban Ecologies on the Edge: Making Manila’s Resource Frontier.

About the book:

Urban Ecologies on the Edge: Making Manila’s Resource Frontier explores the multiple, paradoxical stories of urban provisioning through the example of Manila’s socio-ecological relations with nearby Laguna Lake. The book received the 2022 AAG Meridian Book Award for Outstanding Scholarly Work in Geography and the 2024 Benda Prize for First Book on Southeast Asian Studies.

About the author:

Kristian Karlo Saguin is an Associate Professor of Geography at the University of the Philippines Diliman, whose research cuts across various socio-ecological questions in urban, agrarian, and environmental studies.
