Representative Loren Legarda introduces Sulo: The Philippines Studies Initiative at NYU

 

Our Mission and Vision:

Vision: Sulo: The Global Philippine Studies Initiative at NYU aims to create an innovative, interdisciplinary Global Philippine Studies program. Sulo also aims to be a hub for global Philippine scholars and community organizations to foster collaboration, research, and advocacy.

Mission: Sulo’s mission is to foster an interdisciplinary approach to the study of the Philippines by:

  • Supporting the development of the next generation of global Philippine Studies scholars through research support grants and fellowships
  • Creating a platform for discussion and dialogue around historical and contemporary social, political, and cultural issues and events
  • Creating innovative courses
  • Encouraging the study of Filipino languages, histories, and experiences by undergraduate and graduate students 
  • Promoting the research agendas of current faculty
  • Building networks with other scholars, artists, organizers, community organizations, and programs, in the Philippines and elsewhere
