Mental Floss recently sat down with NYU SPS CALA’s radio reporting and podcasting instructor, Dan Bobkoff, to get his professional opinion on the best podcasting equipment for beginners. Bobkoff cites a few pieces of equipment that he believes to be worthy investments – the Sony MDR-7506 headphones, a Rode or Audio-Technica mic, and Tascam or Zoom recorders. He also contributes valuable tips, such as listening to your podcast through speakers and consumer headphones in different environments to pick up on mistakes you may have missed at the computer when editing, or using mics that cut down on background noise whilst hosting interviews. Additionally, he suggests learning Pro Tools or Adobe Audition, as many local public radio stations utilize them. You can see the full article here to read all the helpful tips given by Bobkoff and other experts in the field.
Bobkoff is a showrunner at Three Uncanny Four Productions, a podcast joint venture with Sony Music. Previously, he was the executive producer of audio at Business Insider, where he created and hosted the podcast Household Name (now known as Brought to You By). He has been a reporter at NPR News, Marketplace, and NPR member stations in Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Ohio and was part of NPR’s team covering the Boston Marathon bombings.
