Afua Preston, CALA’s Associate Director of Administration, Honored with 25-Year NYU Service Award

We are proud to announce that CALA’s Associate Director of Administration, Afua Preston, was recently honored with an NYU Service Award recognizing her 25 years of dedication to the University.  Afua began her NYU career in Bobst, where she worked as a Stacks Department supervisor prior to joining SPS.  For the past four years, Afua has been an invaluable part of the CALA team, managing a wide variety of administrative responsibilities to provide an exceptional experience for the staff, faculty, and students. 

Please join us in congratulating Afua on this milestone and in celebrating all of her hard work, generosity of spirit, and sense of fun.

CALA Faculty Leonard Quart to be Featured Guest on CUNY TV

Tune in to CUNY TV for a screening of the film, Closely Watched Trains, followed by a discussion lead by CALA faculty, Leonard Quart. Leonard is an Adjunct Assistant Professor at NYU SPS CALA. He is a Professor Emeritus of Cinema at CUNY and COSI. He is a contributing editor to Cineaste; a columnist for Berkshire Eagle; and co-author of American Film and Society Since 1945, 4th edition (Praeger), and The Films of Mike Leigh (Cambridge University Press). He has also written innumerable reviews and essays on films and other subjects for Dissent, The London Magazine, Logos, and Film Quarterly.

Educational Researcher and MSPW Adjunct Faculty, Katherine Newhouse’s Latest Conference Presentations

Doctoral candidate Katherine Newhouse co-presented, “Come co-produce with us! Attending to multimodal embodiments with court-involved youth” at last month’s Penn Ethnography Forum as part of the Reimagining Futures Research team. She will also be presenting “Small Space, Big Moments: Understanding spatialized experiences of youth and adults in restricted educational settings” at the Invisible College conference in conjunction with the American Education Research Association in April.

Both presentations build from her research, which focuses on the experiences of youth who are receiving special education services and/or youth who are involved in the juvenile justice system. Taking up a qualitative research methodology, Katherine is studying educational spaces from within the special education and juvenile justice system to better understand how they are created and maintained by youth and adults. Katherine brings her commitment and deep understanding of research methods to her adjunct teaching with the MS in Professional Writing program, in particular, the fall elective course “Writing and Social Science Research.”

Tomorrow’s Staged Reading of ‘Good People’ Has Been Cancelled

It is with our deepest regret that we must cancel the staged reading of Good People scheduled for tomorrow, Thursday, March 21, 2019, at Scandinavia House.

Unfortunately, an actor had to cancel and we were unable to find a suitable replacement. The good news is that this event will be rescheduled for the Fall semester. We will be sure to notify you via email with updated event details.

Can Xue’s Love in the New Millennium, Translated by Annelise Finegan Wasmoen, Longlisted for 2019 Man Booker International Prize

The 2019 Man Booker International Prize longlist has been announced! Awarded annually to one translated work of fiction published in the UK and Ireland, the prize uniquely honors both the original authors and the translators who have brought their stories to English readers. Among the notably diverse longlist—dominated this year by women writers and small publishers—is Can Xue’s Love in the New Millennium, translated from the Chinese by Annelise Finegan Wasmoen, Academic Director and Clinical Assistant Professor of the MS in Translation program. 
 
Since it was published last year, Love in the New Millennium has been featured in Harper’s Magazine and Lithub and was praised by the Man Booker judges as, “a meditative experience that opens up a fever dream of contemporary Chinese writing.”
 
The shortlist will be announced April 9th and the winner on May 21st.

The Guardian Article: Is the Era of Artificial Speech Translation Upon Us?

This week, The Guardian published their latest contribution to a debate that has surrounded the translation industry for years: is technology making human translators obsolete? The article focuses specifically on advancements in artificial speech technologies like the new Google Home interpreting function and Waverly Labs’ Pilot earpiece, which can translate two users’ conversations in real time or translate speech in a single user’s surroundings.  Despite their potential for application in a wide variety of personal and professional settings, it is clear that these devices are far from providing a substitute for real-life translators. As writer Marek Kohn concludes,

“When machine translation becomes a ubiquitous commodity product, human language skills will command a premium. The person who has a language in their head will always have the advantage over somebody who relies on a device, in the same way that somebody with a head for figures has the advantage over somebody who has to reach for a calculator. Though the practical need for a lingua franca will diminish, the social value of sharing one will persist. And software will never be a substitute for the subtle but vital understanding that comes with knowledge of a language. That knowledge will always be needed to pick the nuances from the noise.”

MS in Professional Writing student, Tony Davis, publishes book ranked #25 on Amazon in Atheism and #130 for all books on Religion

MS in Professional Writing student, Tony Davis, published his first book God Loves You: Some Restrictions May Apply (and Many Other Christian Dilemmas) earlier this year and it quickly rose in rank on Amazon to #25 in Atheism and #130 for all books on Religion.  

In his book, Tony recounts his personal journey from devout, fundamentalist Southern Baptist, to skeptic questioning what he saw as the most troubling aspects of a literal interpretation of the Bible and, ultimately, to outspoken unbeliever with a strong conviction in the importance of religious liberties.  Most important for Tony is the idea that these liberties extend to everyone, including non-believers who wish to remain free of religious influence, be it from the Church, the government, or others. Written over a 10-year period from 2008 to 2018, and published while Tony is completing his MS in Professional Writing coursework, Tony’s book was drafted across twenty-five countries and four continents, including an active combat zone, as well as a number of states in the US. Congratulations Tony on this impressive work.

Happy International Women’s Day!

The significance of March 8th – here’s a little history of a day often ignored across the US. Maybe not for much longer…

2019 US Congress

The first official National Woman’s Day, held in the US, happened in New York City on February 28, 1909. (The organizers, members of the Socialist Party of America, wanted it to be on a Sunday so that working women could participate.) It was held in remembrance of the 1908 strike of the International Ladies Garment Worker’s Union. Thousands of people showed up to various events uniting the suffragist and socialist causes, whose goals had often been at odds. Labor organizer Leonora O’Reilly and others addressed the crowd at the main meeting in the Murray Hill Lyceum, at 34th Street and Third Avenue.

On March 19, 1911 (the 40th anniversary of the Paris Commune, a radical socialist government that briefly ruled France in 1871), the first International Woman’s Day was held, drawing more than 1 million people to rallies worldwide. With the outbreak of World War I in 1914, most attempts at social reform ground to a halt, but women continued to march and demonstrate on International Woman’s Day.

In 1917 against the backdrop of the First World War, women in Russia, led by feminist Alexandra Kollontai, chose to protest and strike for “Bread and Peace” in Petrograd on the last Sunday in February*. Many historians argue that this revolt proved to be an influential link in the chain of events that led to the abdication of Czar Nicholas II, and the Russian Revolution.

From its official adoption in Soviet Russia following the Revolution in 1917, the holiday was predominantly celebrated in communist and socialist countries. It was celebrated by the communists in China from 1922, and by Spanish communists from 1936. After the founding of the People’s Republic of China on October 1, 1949, the state council proclaimed on December 23 that March 8 would be made an official holiday with women in China given a half-day off.

Earth Day Action 2018 by Revolting Lesbians at American Museum of Natural History

In 1975 during International Women’s Year, the United Nations began celebrating International Women’s Day on 8 March. By 2014, it was celebrated in more than 100 countries, and had been made an official holiday in more than 25.

In the US on March 8, 2017, the organizers of the post-election Women’s March called for a women’s strike in their “A Day Without a Woman” actions across the country. In the most recent mid-term elections women ran for office in unprecedented numbers, and many younger women of color won seats. Perhaps one of our 102 female representatives is already drafting legislation to make International Women’s Day a federal holiday – that would be sweet!

*February 23 in Julian calendar is the equivalent of March 8 in Gregorian calendar

Please join us for a special event on Thursday, March 21st, from 10am-1pm at Scandinavia House. Acclaimed Broadway, film, and TV actors will read David Lindsay-Abaire’s Tony Award-nominated play Good People, directed by NYUSPS CALA instructor John Erman. 

Synopsis (via StageAgent): Life in Boston’s Southie neighborhood is no joke for single mother Margaret Walsh. Fired from her job, facing eviction, she doesn’t know whether to risk it all on a game of bingo, or join a drunken old classmate on a warm bit of sidewalk. Will she catch a break from the cranky young manager at the Dollar Store or the landlady with a craft business selling googly-eyed rabbits? Or the man from her past, now a successful doctor, who left town at a crucial moment long ago? With wry humour and astonishing realism, Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright David Lindsay-Abaire creates both a loving portrait of his hometown and a widely relatable tale of socio-economic struggle. In the world of Good People, we see that very few can afford to be as good as they think they are, but acts of sacrifice and gestures of kindness come at the most surprising moments and from the most unexpected of sources.

ATA Newsletter Features Translation Pedagogy Article by CALA Instructor Ana Salotti

CALA Translation instructor Ana Salotti has been featured in the Spring edition of Deep Focus, a quarterly newsletter published by the American Translator’s Association. Her article, “Teaching an Online Language-Neutral AVT Course: Mission Impossible?,”  provides an inside look into the pedagogical approach, teaching outcomes, and challenges faced in her first online, language-neutral Audiovisual Translation (AVT) course in our Certificate in Translation Industry Essentials. 

Through critical reflection on her audiovisual translation educator practice, Salotti points to areas of improvement both in the execution of her own course and in the advancement of AVT studies more generally.  The lack of degree programs specializing in AVT is evidence that the US still has some catching up to do in the field, but the growing number of postgraduate courses has proven to be a promising start. “We still have a long way to go,” she concludes, “but we’re getting closer.”
