“A hospital is not just a laboratory. A patient is not simply a diagnosis. And medicine is often more than a science…. And while art may not seem like the most essential aspect of a medical curriculum, amidst a stream of facts, diagrams, equations and machines, its value is critical. Standing before a carved sarcophagus from 350 B.C. can communicate the unspeakable magnitude of death and dying more than a textbook ever could.”

Film Screening: Central Station (Brazil) — Monday February 29th, 6pm

Moderated by Patricia Trowbridge (Adj. Instructor, Portuguese),

this screening is part of CALA’s film series, “Are you Talking to Me” At the National Opera Center.

Central Station is a 1998 Brazilian-French film set in Brazil that tells the story of a young boy’s friendship with a jaded middle-aged woman. Directed by Walter Salles and featuring Fernanda Montenegro and Vinicius de Oliveira , the film received two Academy Award nominations (Best Foreign Film, Best Actress).

Film Series: Are You Talking to Me?

In this new film series we ask, “Are you talking to me?” to situate ourselves in the expanding world of voices and images. Explore different worlds and language through films by attending screenings introduced by NYUSPS instructors at the National Opera Center. The following afternoon, continue the discussion in a class* at NYU SPS’s Midtown Center.

All screenings are on Mondays at 6pm and are FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC (RSVP required)
