Before Marvel and DC: Superheroes of the Ancient World (BBC Article)

heroesblogpostWhat do Odysseus and Green Arrow have in common? A lot more than you think, according to writer Natalie Haynes. In a feature for the BBC,  she explores the relationship between today’s comic book superheroes and the mythological heroes of old–and our cultural fascination with both.

“Superheroes have existed for as long as stories, before writing and across every culture from which we can find evidence. Fionn mac Cumhaill built the Giant’s Causeway in Northern Ireland, and Gilgamesh defeated Humbaba in Mesopotamia. Rama was exiled from Ayodhya in India, while Beowulf slew Grendel and Grendel’s mother in Scandinavia. And that’s before you think about the ancient Greeks, who boasted a plethora of heroes to match any collection from Marvel or DC.”

Coming Soon to a Restaurant Near You: 3D Printed Pizza

3D printed pizza23D printing  is the latest technology  revolutionizing  industry as we know it. From fabricating cars and clothes  to facilitating solutions to real-world problems such as crime  and housing shortages  , there is no end to to 3D technology’s potential to impact everyone’s life . One of the most interesting applications of 3D technology is in the food industry. Beehex, the first company specializing in 3D printed pizza, recently announced a collaboration with the  Neopolitan restaurant Ribalta, which has locations in NYC and Atlanta (full article here). Using the restaurant’s recipes and  top quality ingredients, the Beehex prototype is able to print an oven-ready pizza in under 4 minutes. One of the company’s co-founders is also the creator of the first 3D food printer for NASA. The printer can be equipped with food cartridges that last 30 years, a very important feature for long-distance space missions that may last several years.

This Fall, The Center for Applied Liberal Arts (CALA) is launching NYU’s first ever diploma in Foundations in 3D Design and 3D Printing . The deadline to apply is August 26th (more information here)

radioplay“Calling all literary translators, radio dramatists, and international radio drama enthusiasts! Play for Voices seeks radio play scripts in English translation. Play for Voices is a new podcast of international radio drama slated to launch in the early fall of 2016. Our monthly hour-long show will present new productions of contemporary and classic radio plays from around the world, exploring their aesthetic, social, and political contexts through inventive, multilingual sound design and interviews with authors, translators, and other interesting people. We’ll feature English-language plays and plays in English translation.”

Foreign language skills are a vital part of today’s globalized market.  This article on the Council of Foreign Relations’ website provides an insightful look into the status of foreign language instruction and its impact on both domestic and international professions.

NYU SPS Student Develops Innovative Dance Education Program

Cheryl LeeCheryl Lee, NYU SPS student and Director of Cultural Enrichment at the Shorecrest Preparatory School in St. Petersburg, Florida, recently developed a dance education partnership for middle school students after taking the course The Arts and Education: Designing Effective Programs (taught by Beth Vogel) . In this blog post, Lee describes her project in more detail and how it grew from an idea to a full-fledged program proposal which may be implemented in the near future. Congratulations, Cheryl!

“As my final assignment, I proposed the undertaking of a: Creative Learning Partnership:  Shorecrest Preparatory School and Academy Prep of St. Petersburg.   This venture is a Direct Learning Project for students enrolled at both academic schools.  It is based upon the premise that dance training provides an artistic tool for students to develop physically and socially within the context of cultural enrichment. This project enhances an already established relationship between the two institutions and at the same time increases access to dance education while building bridges within the St. Petersburg community.

CherylLee_dance imageDance training would be provided to middle school students at Academy Prep by Teaching Artists affiliated with Shorecrest Prep, assisted by Shorecrest Prep upper school students.  Students of both institutions would create dance art & perform together.   After an introductory workshop followed by weekly classes where students will focus on the technical vocabulary and dance training, the project would culminate in a joint performance.  Students discover how to collaborate and communicate while developing personal skills and achieving improved health status. Upon my return to St. Petersburg, Florida after attending this course at NYU, I participated in graduation exercises at Shorecrest Prep.  As incoming Chair of the Performing Arts Division of Shorecrest Prep’s Arts & Humanities Department, I shared a brief explanation of my Creative Learning Partnership proposal with our CFO and she suggested to me that there may be scholarship funds available to partially fund and launch my project; I have since submitted my NYU proposal for consideration, and I look forward to hearing the results soon. ”

Will emoji Become a New Language

FULLY 92 PERCENT OF ALL PEOPLE ONLINE USE EMOJI NOW, AND ONE-THIRD OF THEM DO SO DAILY.

3faceemojiEmoji are “picture characters” or pictographs that are popular in text-based communication. They are commonly used in smartphone texting, social media sharing (e.g., nearly half of all text on Instagram contains emoji).

On November 17, 2015 the Oxford Dictionaries announced the emoji , ????commonly known as ‘Face with Tears of Joy’, as its “Word” of the Year for 2015.

Students are doing PhDs in emoji studies. There is a serious debate about whether or not emoji is a universal language, or if it is in fact, destroying language. This image is the famous first line of Herman Melville’s Moby Dick, First line of MobyEmojiDicktranslated into emoji. Emoji Dick is a crowd-sourced and Kickstarter-funded translation created by Fred Beneson. Approximately 10,000 sentences were  translated at least three times before the “best” were chosen for the book.

In Wired magazine, Clive Thompson quotes linguist and writer, Gretchen McCulloch on the topic: “They’re trying to solve one of the big problems of writing online, which is that you have the words but you don’t have the tone of voice. Purists sniff. What have we become, children with crayons? Surely words alone can convey emotional tone? Maybe—if you’re a novelist with years of experience in the patient forging and editing of prose.”
