SPS Literary Reading at KGB Bar on December 2nd

We are pleased to announce that NYUSPS will be hosting another end-of-semester literary reading at KGB Bar on Friday, December 2nd, 2016! Full event details can be found on the flyer below.

Students enrolled in a Fall 2016 writing course are welcome to submit their work to read at the event.

Submission guidelines: Pieces can be fiction or non-fiction, memoir or genre fiction, prose poems or sestinas and should be 4-5 pages in length at most. Chosen students will be required to attend a meeting during the week of the reading to rehearse and discuss logistics.
Please send your submission to susan.caplan@nyu.edu no later than Monday, November 7th.

Recap: Division of Languages and Humanities’ “Political Rhetoric: The Presidential Campaign and Beyond” Panel

On October 19th, The Division of Languages and Humanities held its inaugural “Dialogues in Languages and Humanities” event, with the timely theme of  political rhetoric.  NYU professor Ruth Ben-Ghait, Yale professor Jason Stanley, and WSJ columnist Ben Zimmer served as the night’s panel of speakers who considered the power that political rhetoric has to both  build communities and create rifts in society that have lasting repercussions. They used cases like the current US presidential election and the United Kingdom’s historic Brexit vote to facilitate a lively, engaging, and informative discussion of how politicians and the media use language to shape our perceptions of society.

Writing is the Work of Our Time

Today, Oct 20th, is the US National Day on Writing– a day devoted to the importance, joy, and evolution of writing! As literacy researcher Deborah Brandt explains in the video below, “Writing is the work of our time.”

And she should know— Brandt studies writing in the world beyond the classroom and has documented the rise of writing as a dominant form of labor across industries.  Influenced by industry shifts (from manufacturing things to manufacturing services, knowledge, information, and data) and the digital revolution, more and more professionals require the skills to write clearly, effectively, and with purpose. Your Next Shoes Could Come From a 3D Printer (NYT Article)

Shopping on the high street in any major city can feel frustratingly like déjà vu. Although mass production and access to cheap labor means that consumers have more options than ever when it comes to fashion retailers, the trend-based styles tend to offer little variety and come at an ethical and environmental cost. Luckily, though, technological advancements are helping companies push the boundaries of customization while still retaining an affordable price point. The New York Times recently profiled one such brand called Feetz, a San Diego-based footwear start-up that’s stepping into the fashion world with a line of 3D printed shoes.

In the article, Feetz’ founder Lucy Beard explained how advanced printing methods inspired her to put her tech background to use in the footwear industry. After leaving her job as an actuary, she now oversees a small team of 15 employees and over 100 3D printers, which can be adjusted to fit the different sizes and shapes of their designs.

Ordering a pair of Feetz shoes is a simple and modern process: customers download the company’s app and use it to design a personalized 3D model of their shoes, which Beard’s team prints up and ships out, all for around $200.

Despite the relative newness of the 3D printing industry, Feetz’ low production costs and lack of inventory has made for the beginnings of a successful business model, leaving plenty of room for growth as the technology and manufacturing processes continue to improve.

Tiles of the City

tiles-grammercy-parkThe area around The Center for Applied Liberal Arts’ headquarters  ( specifically Union Square, Chelsea, and Gramercy) is known as the Tile District of NYC and home to dozens of tile showrooms, both retail and for the trade only. From subway stations to glamorous interiors, there are many examples of masterfully crafted tilework in New York City (for example, Rafael Guastavino’s tiled vaults in Grand Central Station and St John the Divine).  As Interior Designer and NYU SPS instructor Susan Slotkis points out in her blog, there are different types of tilework to look out for :

Tiles: made of any number of materials, such as stone (e.g. marble and granite), ceramic, porcelain, or   glass, are usually rectilinear in shape, and cut into standard sizes. (Resilient and soft tiles, not the subject of this article, may include leather, vinyl, rubber, linoleum, carpet, etc.)

Mosaic: smaller units of tiles are often hand-set like a jigsaw puzzle, or more uniformly machine-cut and arranged in sheets. tiles-churches

Picassiette: loosely translated from French meaning stolen pottery, is a decorative application of tiling of usually shards of porcelain often to small projects such as frames and to layer furniture but also to larger projects, e.g. Gaudi’s Guell Park, Barcelona.

AndyHamiltonatShowcasewithErolsfiguresLeading up to the inauguration of new president Andrew Hamilton on Sunday, NYU hosted  a wide range of events this week  celebrating NYU’s innovative programs and global community. One of these events brought the Center for Applied Liberal Arts together with the NYU Production Lab to explore the impact of graphic design and visual effects on contemporary filmmaking.  From feature films like Iron Man and Tree of Life  to commercials for pharmaceutical companies,   faculty members Erol Gunduz, Gavin Guerra, Misha Zabranska, and Bradley Friedman talked about their experiences as animators, directors, and visual effects supervisors. President Hamilton and other visitors were able to see creative examples of virtual reality, visual effects, and 3D printed designs made by NYU faculty and alumni,  including Elizabeth A DeAngelis (elizabethdeangelis.weebly.com), Yangyi Liu, and Sarat Kollimarla (www.skollimarla.com)

President Hamilton’s inauguration will be streamed live on Sunday at 11am here.

Currently, the Center of Applied Liberal Arts offers a Diploma in 3D Design and 3D Printing as well as noncredit courses in motion graphics, graphic design, 3D design/fabrication, filmmaking and producing, and  interior design.
