The largest fair devoted to contemporary art wrapped up on Sunday. Over 250 galleries from 29 countries and 77,000 attendees converged at Art Basel in Miami Beach Dec. 1st-4th. Political art was more front-in-center than in past fairs, and many of those artworks sold quickly. While reports indicate thinner crowds partially attributed to political and economic uncertainty and the presence of the Zika virus in Miami, this year’s Art Basel suggests a positive direction for the art market in 2017. Latin American galleries were prominent, featuring both familiar and lesser known artists and a diversity of compelling works that perhaps had the most to offer to those looking at art as more than a financial investment.
