Congratulations to Our 2018 Graduates!

This past Friday, NYU SPS Masters students—along with their families and friends—filled the seats of Radio City Music Hall for their Convocation celebration. After the NYU Pipes and Drums kicked off the ceremony, University President Andrew Hamilton and SPS Dean Dennis DiLorenzo welcomed the graduates, commending their achievements and encouraging them to bring the dedication and curiosity they cultivated through their studies into the next stage of their lives. Commencement speaker Ann Compton, ABC News’ former White House correspondent, had a similar message: “Be smart. Be kind. Be courageous. Be the leaders this nation needs and deserves.”

We hope you will join us in congratulating CALA’s M.S. in Translation and M.S. in Professional Writing graduates, as well as the rest of the NYU Class of 2018!

Volunteer with the TED Translators Program

The TED Translators program is a massive crowdsourced project that makes important ideas from brilliant thinkers and doers freely accessible at a global scale. The program welcomes people from every discipline and culture who seek a deeper understanding of the world and are always looking for new volunteers to get involved and contribute.

NYU students can join the global community of TED Translators and gain real-world experience by translating fascinating content, collaborating with peers and mentors to improve their skills, and most of all, bringing important, breakthrough ideas into other languages.

How can I take my translation/interpretation business to the next level? What can I do that will set me apart and allow me to select my own preferred clients? In this session, the speaker will share her experiences of building an ideal client base and growing a successful business model. It’s not simply about translating their content. It’s about designing and implementing innovative strategies that will make the client visible to entirely new audiences.

Speaker bio:
Carmen Ring worked as an in-house translator and interpreter for several international companies for more than 10 years. She accumulated experience in all aspects of cross-cultural marketing, business, and partnerships. Recognizing the need to balance work with family life, she started her own company and began to help other entrepreneurs conquer international markets, thus opening the doors to lucrative opportunities that would have otherwise been out of reach.

REDS — An Exhibition Dedicated To The Color Red, On View Now at Mnuchin Gallery

Now through June 9th, the Mnuchin Gallery is hosting  Reds , an exhibition offering a focused look at artists’ use of red over sixty years, from the postwar period to the present day. Clayton Press, art adviser and faculty member at the Center for Applied Liberal Arts, is the author of the fully illustrated catalog for this exhibition, which features paintings and sculptures by 25 artists including Francis Bacon, Louise Bourgeois, Alexander Calder, Willem de Kooning, Jeff Koons, Yayoi Kusama, and Mark Rothko, to name a few.

Since the cave paintings of Lascaux, the color red has played a starring role in the story of art history. Through the centuries, it has conjured emotions such as love, lust, and rage, and served as a symbol of wealth, war, revolution, and religious sacrifice. Red is one of the most powerful tools in an artist’s color arsenal. Its presence ensures bold visual impact and guarantees our immediate attention.

NYC Mayor’s Office Initiative: One Book, One New York

Commissioner Julie Menin of The Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment has announced the launch of the second annual “One Book, One New York” program—a city-wide initiative to enrich our cultural perspectives through literature and foster community among NYC residents, local libraries, and bookstores.
