CALA MS in Translation and SPS Wasserman Partner with TransPerfect for a Virtual Resume Review Day

CALA’s MS in Translation and the SPS Wasserman Center recently partnered with the global employer TransPerfect for a virtual resume review event open to students interested in careers in translation, marketing, and project management. TransPerfect is among the largest language services companies in the world, with offices in over 100 cities and specialities including translation, media localization, and e-discovery. Representatives of the company spoke with 12 SPS students on Friday, February 21, to discuss their resumes and career goals.

“The SPS Wasserman Center had been working with TransPerfect for a number of years,” says Stephanie Cziczo of Wasserman, who helped to spearhead the event. Cziczo and her contacts at TransPerfect devised the virtual resume review session “to deepen relationships with students in Translation and Project Management, but also other SPS programs.” Each student submitted a resume in advance of the event and spent 15 minutes with a TransPerfect representative receiving feedback and discussing relevant roles at the company. 

“I was really excited when Stephanie told me that TransPerfect was going to hold a resume review day with us,” recalls Lu Liu, a Translation Society member who helped to coordinate the event. “I had a great time talking with Darya and she gave me valuable feedback on my resume. She also shared with me the translator’s daily responsibility and how different departments work together as a team at TransPerfect.”

Given the high level of student interest in the first resume review day, Cziczo is hoping to set up another session in the coming months. “Lu and the Translation Society jumped on the opportunity and really brought the event together,” she says. “The feedback I have received from both the employer and the students was that the event was very beneficial, and we hope to hold another in the future!”

MS in Professional Writing Student, Christinne Govereau, Selected as 2020 Judge for the Center of Plain Language

Christinne Govereau, a student in the MS in Professional Writing Program (MSPW), will serve as a judge and evaluator for two programs at the Center for Plain Language in 2020. Christinne will be returning as a judge for the ClearMark awards. Last year, she judged the Digital: Apps and Microsites competition. This year, Christine will also serve an evaluator for the Federal Plain Language Report Card.

In addition to being a part-time MSPW student, Christinne currently works as the Senior Technical Editor for the US Energy Information Administration (EIA), a sub-agency of the US Department of Energy. In her full-time role at EIA, Christinne works with subject matter experts on energy-related forecasts and projections. She also manages a team of two editors, working to oversee all agency communications. She built her career in government communications after 11 years as a stay-at-home parent.  

“I have learned so much about digital content in the MSPW” writes Christinne. “I also appreciate how well the classes are preparing technical writers for what they will face in the ‘real’ world…the professors at NYU are doing a fantastic job of preparing MSPW students to deliver right out of the gate.”

Seeking an internship with purpose, MS in Professional Writing student Rachel Hirschhaut took on a summer Content Marketing Associate role for Pawlicy Advisor before they announce $1M in total investments

When seeking a summer internship, MS in Professional Writing (MSPW) student Rachel Hirschhaut wanted something that provided practical experience and a sense of fulfillment. She found both in a position at Pawlicy Advisor, a startup company that connects pet owners with affordable pet insurance plans. This month, Pawlicy Advisor announced investments totaling $1M. 

As the summer Content Marketing Associate, Rachel wrote copy, designed content, and developed communication strategies to promote the services of the company. Rachel helped to shape and publicize the company’s brand, attracting attention from customers, investors, and industry publications.

“I interviewed with Pawlicy while taking the MSPW’s Principles of Information Architecture core course,” Rachel explains, “which sparked their interest because they also needed help with web design.” During her internship, she helped to boost social media and web engagement through content development and SEO keyword research. 

At Pawlicy Advisor, Rachel was able to promote a company with a positive mission while getting a taste of startup culture, all before her final semester in the MSPW this spring.

Achieving Work-School-Life Balance? M.S. in Professional Writing Student Vaia Trittas Publishes Her Suggestions for NYU’s Wasserman Center for Career Development

In a piece recently published by the Wasserman Career for Career Development, MS in Professional Writing (MSPW) student Vaia Trittas describes her own journey towards achieving a work-life balance that includes graduate coursework. Trittas, who works full-time as a Program Administrator at NYU, identifies time management, organizational skills, and empathy as key to juggling multiple priorities. Trittas also notes that support structures within the program were essential to welcoming her back to student life. Trittas writes: “The NYU School of Professional Studies (SPS) grants working professionals – like myself – the flexibility to absorb a full course load at our own pace. Backpack Drive for St. Croix Elementary School

MS in Professional Writing student Jenelle Woodrup is coordinating a backpack drive for 5th graders attending Pearl B. Larsen Elementary School in St. Croix, United States Virgin Islands, a community that was affected by Hurricane Maria. Jenelle’s backpack drive includes school supplies and classroom items that will be used throughout the year.

Two Dance Premieres by NYCB Soloist and Choreographer Troy Schumacher

While completing CALA’s program in visual and performing arts administration, New York City Ballet soloist and BalletCollective director Troy Schumacher was busy choreographing two projects that will have their premieres this Fall.

On October 23rd, 25th, and 26th, BalletCollective and The Knights will present the world premier of Faraway. Among several collaborations in this innovative performance, Schumacher’s choreography is combined with  Judd Greenstein’s musical score and Zaria Forman’s hyper-realistic pastel drawings of our planet’s ice-worlds. Eight of Schumacher’s NYCB dancer colleagues and 24 musicians will perform the ballet on a 70 feet-deep stage at the GK Arts Center in Dumbo.

From November 14-17th, The Martha Graham Dance Company and Montclair State University’s Peak Performances will present The Auditions, a work about people vying to be a new kind of pioneer that commemorates the 75th anniversary of the premiere of Graham and Aaron Copeland’s seminal Appalachian Spring.  Schumacher choreographed the new piece in collaboration with composer Augusta Read Thomas.

Website Prototype Projects by MS in Professional Writing Students

In Principles of Information Architecture, a core course taught by Dr. Steven Goss, MS in Professional Writing students learn about information architecture and user experience through the study and practice of techniques used to develop websites and web apps. For their final projects this past spring, students were asked to develop a website prototype based on a mock request for proposal (RFP). In response to the mock RFP, students sought ways to match content presentation methods with the specific needs of their target audiences– which varied across projects. After submitting their prototypes, the class took on the role of RFP reviewers and voted for the strongest prototypes. The following student website prototypes were ranked the highest in the Spring 2019 course (in no order):

Remote Work Life Dot Com

As someone who works remotely and takes classes remotely, I thought it would be helpful to others (remote employees, freelancers, and students) to create a site that addresses the intersection of remote work and self-care. I organized my site across topics that grew out of user interviews and user testing. The site also has a social media element, allowing users to create a profile and interact with each other.New York Reads

New York is a literary city filled with stories that inspire and a thriving culture that supports reading and writing. While websites or newspapers may publish “best of” lists, there is no regularly updated online source that keeps readers informed of new and well-reviewed books about the city they love. New York Reads will fill that gap by providing a timely collection of online reviews and recommendations for novels about/set in New York City. All Sport Fan Community

All Sport Fan Community is a site dedicated to a global and avid sport fan base. It serves as an all inclusive sport experience, bringing fans together with an integrated social media platform, game schedules, and the most up-to-date news across all sporting leagues.

The game of baseball has been called “the gentleman’s game.” Yet, women love the game as much as men. Diamond Dames is a blog/content site about professional baseball for female fans. The site provides a place where women can learn, talk, and share their knowledge of the game.

City on a Shoestring
Creator: Rachel Hirschhaut

City on a Shoestring seeks to answer the question “Where should we eat today?” for cost-conscious food enthusiasts. Articles highlight a diverse list of affordable cafes and restaurants in popular areas of New York City. The website also explores how people apply Information Architecture and UX principles when choosing restaurants.

Siyu Fei, MS in Translation Graduate, Receives NYU International Student Leadership Award

We are pleased to announce that MS in Translation Fall 2018 graduate Siyu Fei has received a university-wide International Student Leadership Award from the Office of Global Services. Siyu was recognized with the award for excellent communication and interpersonal skills, in addition to a generous spirit. She brought enthusiasm to both academic and extracurricular activities in her time at NYUSPS. She held leadership roles in the SPS student club Translation Society over multiple semesters.

Carol Lujan, MS in Translation Graduate, Teaches 5th Graders Ways to Use Their Language Skills

In a recent ATA School Outreach Profile, MS in Translation graduate Carol Lujan detailed her experience in visiting a 5th grade classroom to teach students about the importance of language learning and the kinds of opportunities available to multilingual professionals. Carol engaged the students by showing them examples of popular jobs in the field—including translation, localization, and interpreting—and the ways in which they allow people from different backgrounds to connect with one another and enjoy the same media.

Carol concluded by providing examples of the kinds of institutions where translators and interpreters work, including the UN, the FBI, the World Health Organization, hospitals, courts, and multinational companies. At the end of the presentation, some students expressed a desire to become language professionals themselves one day. Carol noted, “In the Q&A session at the end, some of the kids were interested in becoming translators and localizers and asked about how to prepare in order to accomplish this. I was happy to see that they were so interested!”

Article by Ola Salem, an MS in Professional Writing student, listed in Foreign Policy’s Top Ten Stories of 2018

Congratulations to Ola Salem, a current MS in Professional Writing (MSPW) student, for writing one of Foreign Policy’s (FP) top ten stories of 2018!
 

Published in December, Ola’s article Saudi Arabia Declares War on America’s Muslim Congresswomen was ranked as one of the most read FP articles for the year, based on reader clicks. 

Below is a short interview with Ola about this experience and her professional writing goals:

Q: How did it feel to make Foreign Policy’s Top Stories of 2018 list? What was your first reaction?
I was pleasantly surprised that my story was one of the most read in 2018 on the Foreign Policy magazine website. I was not expecting the piece to be so widely circulated. Within 24 hours of its publication a number of foreign and local media had picked it up and reposted it or wrote their own versions of the piece while referencing mine in their work. A number of US Congress members also shared the story on their social media accounts. Commentators on TV were discussing it with political analysts. One of the things we focus on while studying at MSPW is that our words are meant to be read. There is no greater form of flattery/pride for writers than to know our words have spread and are having an impact.

Q: This semester, you are completing your internship course in the MSPW. Can you describe this experience?
For the past three months I have interned at a multimedia organization in the heart of the US capital, Washington, DC. The hours have been long, but the experience has been vast. As I approach the end of my short internship, I’m thrilled to have had the opportunity to use some of the theory work from class in a real life setting.

Q: How do you see this internship work helping to shape your future professional writing trajectory? 
This internship has helped me discover what I want from a job and what I would like to do once I graduate. As much as I enjoy news writing, I would like to do more investigative pieces and work on stories that I care about rather than cover every day events. I know that I would not have reached this conclusion if I didn’t work on breaking news with deadline pressure as I did in this internship and in my work prior to enrolling in the MSPW.

Q: What other articles have you published since the FP top story?
Since the December FP piece, I have co-written two more stories for the magazine. In the first article,  The Secret Lives of Arab Princesses, I conducted more than a handful of interviews and drew on my own experiences living in the Gulf.  In the second article, Arab Regimes Are the World’s Most Powerful Islamophobes, we look at Middle East governments and how they have forged alliances with right-wing groups in the West dedicated to anti-Muslim bigotry.

Q: Any MSPW shout-outs? 
All faculty in the MSPW have been supportive. But two in particular have gone beyond their academic duties to support my work in class and outside of class, directing me whenever I was at a crossroads: Dr. Kristine Kerr has been my academic advisor since I began studying at MSPW in 2017. She has helped guide me in my classes and encouraged me to assert myself at my internship and continue writing; and Sonja Ryst shared her incredible wealth of knowledge and experience to our classes last year. Sonja was also supportive of my work outside of class and gave me the courage to write and pitch my stories.
